There is a big difference between writing films and TV shows: Salman is interested in screenplay writing, gives suggestions; When Sanjay Dutt started crying after hearing the story

Can a film be imagined without a story? The answer will be no. After all, the audience likes or dislikes a film based on the story. The initial work of giving a story the shape of a film is done by screenplay writers. The screenplay of a film is usually between 90 to 120 pages. It can take writers about 3 months or more to write it. However, even after so much creative work, the fees of writers are less compared to actors and directors. In this week’s Reel to Real, we talked about the difference between script and screenplay writing, their process, challenges and budget. For this, we spoke to writers Raj Shandilya and Rajiv Kaul. Both of them also revealed some interesting stories related to actors. They told that once Sanjay Dutt started crying after listening to the screenplay of the film. In the film Ready, his character was also changed on the request of Salman Khan. A screenplay is needed to tell a story
A story is needed to make a film. In the beginning, an idea is considered whether a film can be made on it or not. This idea can be of 2 words or even 2 pages. The entire story is crafted on this idea. To tell this story, we need a screenplay. This means that the screenplay is the larger form of the story, which is seen on the big screen. The screenplay of a film is between 90 and 120 pages.

Usually the screenplay of a film is of 90 to 120 pages. This is because usually the runtime of a film is between one and a half hours to two hours. One page in a screenplay is usually equal to one minute of screen time. What is a bounded script?

A bound script means that you have everything ready. Which includes story, screenplay and dialogues. With this, the actor understands everything easily. He does not need any separate narration. Emotion is necessary for comedy

Raaj Shaandilyaa told that emotions are very much needed to write a screenplay of comedy genre. He also said that only middle class children can do good comedy because they have a lot of emotions. They have suffered a lot in their life, due to which they are able to convert sorrow into humor. Raaj Shaandilyaa is Kapil Sharma’s first writer

Raaj has worked with Kapil Sharma in the show Comedy Circus. He said, ‘In the beginning itself I had written a script for Kapil ji that when he becomes a part of this show, I will definitely narrate it to him. I had also messaged him. Later when he came to this show, he remembered my message. He asked me to narrate the story myself. He liked the story very much. Then from then onwards I started writing for him.’ Comedian Sudesh Lahiri cannot read the script, he has to be reminded

Raaj has also worked with comedian Sudesh Lahiri. Narrating an interesting anecdote about Sudesh, he said, ‘Sudesh is not able to read the script, whether it is in Hindi or Punjabi. He has to be narrated the entire script and made to memorize it. Once I had written his script and gone out for a shoot. Then I had to make him memorize the entire script on the phone for 3 hours.’ Sanjay Dutt started crying after listening to the story of the film

The story of Sanjay Dutt’s film Bhoomi has also been written by Raj. He told, ‘This was the first time I had written a film on a serious issue. When I narrated its screenplay to Sanjay Baba (Sanjay Dutt), he started crying. He even hugged me. During the shooting of this film, I was in touch with Baba for 4-5 months. Sanjay Dutt’s image in the society is very different, but in reality he is very innocent. He also told me about his experience of going to jail, his relationship with his father and many stories from film sets. He always keeps asking about my well-being and that of my family.’ Many times writers’ payments get stuck Rajiv Kaul told that a script writer has to face many problems. The biggest problem is getting less fees and not getting the fees on time. Big production houses hire writers for a high fee. On the other hand, the pay scale of small production houses is low. Many times it happens that new writers work for free with the production house just to get credit in the film, so that their future is bright. However, sometimes it also happens that writers do not get their fees on time. It has happened with Rajiv himself that his payment got stuck. However, he did not reveal the name of that film and director-producer, because it creates problems in getting work in future. He further said, ‘If the film is a hit, then the credit goes to the actor and director. It is said that the director’s vision was very good. He got the best work done from the actors. But when the film flops, all the blame is put on the writer. It is said that the writer did not write the story well. It is really sad to see this.’ Govinda understands things quickly Rajiv has worked with Govinda in 10-12 films including Shola Aur Shabnam, Dulhan Raja. Praising Govinda, Rajiv said, ‘He is such an artist who easily catches everything written on the screenplay.’ His character was changed on Salman’s suggestion Rajiv told that many actors also give suggestions after reading the script. Many times Rajiv also accepts their suggestions. He told that during the film Ready, Salman Khan gave him a suggestion. About this he says, ‘I wanted Salman’s look to be a little like a family man. Then Salman himself told me to make my character a little funny. I found his suggestion right and molded his character accordingly. The film also got a positive response from the fans. Sometimes there is a ruckus over the screenplay Rajiv told that many times there is a debate between the writer, actor and director on the screenplay. Many times he himself has fought with director Anees Bazmee. Rajiv told that in some cases the matter reaches to abuse. However, he says that everyone wants to make the film the best. That is why some differences are inevitable. Also read this story related to Bollywood..
