Indian citizen Sai Varshit Kandula was sentenced to 8 years on Thursday for attempting to attack the White House in the US. Kundla planned the attack with a rented truck on 22 May 2023. He was convicted on 13 May 2024 for intentionally damaging US property. During interrogation, he told that he wanted to take control of the government and kill President Joe Biden. He was planning for this for 6 months. Born in Chandanagar, India, Kandula was a permanent resident of the US and had a green card. According to the Justice Department, the purpose of this attack was to overthrow the democratically elected government of America and establish a dictatorship inspired by Nazi ideology. First had dinner, then hit the barrier with the truck According to court documents, Kundla reached Washington by flight from St. Louis on 22 May 2023. After landing at Dulles Airport at 5:20 pm, he rented a truck at 6:30 pm. After this he had dinner and refueled the truck. After this Kundla headed towards Washington DC. At 9:34 pm, he rammed the truck into the barriers guarding the White House and President’s Park. After hitting it for the first time, he took the truck back and tried again. In the second attempt, the truck broke down and smoke started coming out of the engine. US Secret Service officials arrested Kundla at the scene. Got out of the truck and waved the Nazi flag According to police records, after the engine broke down, Kundla got down from the driver’s seat and went to the back of the truck. He took out a bag with a Nazi flag and started waving it. Such incidents have happened before as well After this attack, the security of the White House was increased. According to the New York Times, incidents of vehicles colliding with barricades near Capitol Hill have happened before as well. About three months after the Capitol violence on January 6, 2021, a car hit two Capitol Police officers. One was killed in this, the other was injured.
