Bangladesh Police has asked Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Apart from Hasina, similar demands have been made against 11 other people. Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since the coup in August last year. Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) had issued arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina, her former ministers, advisors and officials. They were accused of crimes against humanity and genocide. Interpol’s Red Notice helps in finding a person and temporarily arresting him before extradition or legal action. Hasina had said – Bangladesh has now become a terrorist country. Sheikh Hasina, while talking on social media on April 8, had said that earlier Bangladesh was seen as a model of development, but now it has become a terrorist country. The way our leaders and workers are being killed cannot even be described. Awami League, police, lawyers, journalists, artists, everyone is being killed. Hasina said that now even the media is not being allowed to work in this country. Rape, murder, robbery, nothing is being reported. And if it is reported, that TV channel or newspaper will be targeted. She further said, ‘Allah has kept me alive for some purpose. I will return. The day will definitely come when those who target Awami League leaders will be brought to justice.’ The movement against reservation had led to a coup. Sheikh Hasina left the country and came to India on 5 August last year. Students had protested against her across the country. Actually, on June 5, the High Court in Bangladesh had implemented a 30% quota system in jobs, against this reservation, university students in Dhaka were protesting. This reservation was being given to the families of freedom fighters. However, the Hasina government later abolished this reservation. But after this, students started protesting demanding her resignation. A large number of students and common people had come out on the streets against Hasina and her government. Two months after this protest, on 5 August, she resigned from the post of Prime Minister. After Hasina’s resignation, an interim government was formed in Bangladesh. Hasina’s passport cancelled, arrest warrant issued The Yunus government formed after the coup in Bangladesh has registered more than 225 cases against Hasina, ranging from murder, kidnapping to treason. At the same time, the Bangladeshi government has warned that the statements being given by Hasina while staying in India are spoiling the relations between the two countries. The Bangladesh government has also cancelled Sheikh Hasina’s passport due to the murders that took place in July. At the same time, the International Criminal Tribunal of Bangladesh had issued an arrest warrant against her. The tribunal has directed Hasina to appear by February 12. Bangladesh has also appealed to India to deport Hasina.
