The police on Tuesday arrested the car driver who hit 114-year-old athlete Fauja Singh in Jalandhar, Punjab. The accused has been identified as NRI Amritpal Singh Dhillon (27), a resident of Dasupur village in Kartarpur. Amritpal Singh had returned from Canada just 8 days ago. The police have also recovered the Fortuner (PB 20C 7100) from him. He was brought to Bhogpur police station on Tuesday night, where he was questioned. He will be produced in court today. Fauja Singh was taken to a private hospital in Jalandhar in critical condition on July 14. He died there. His last rites have not been performed yet. Jalandhar Rural Police SSP Harvinder Singh Virk said that Fauja Singh had brought glory to Punjab and India all over the world. Fauja Singh had left home for a walk. When he reached 120 meters away on Jalandhar-Pathankot highway, a Fortuner hit him there. Some acquaintances of Fauja Singh present on the spot admitted him to the hospital, where he died during treatment. We had found some parts of the car from the crime scene, those pieces were shown to the experts. This revealed that the car was an old model Fortuner. Police reached the car owner through the parts
The SSP further said that we traced the car on Tuesday evening. At the time of the incident, more than 40 vehicles had passed from that place. When we searched the CCTV, the part of the Fortuner which we had found from the scene was missing. This confirmed to the police that this accident happened with this car. When we increased the scope of checking CCTV, the number of the car was traced, which helped in identifying the accused. The number revealed that the car is registered in the name of Varinder Singh, a resident of Athauli village in Kapurthala. After which the Jalandhar police teams left for Kapurthala and reached Varinder. During interrogation of Varinder Singh, it was found that Amritpal Singh Dhillon, an NRI from Canada, had bought his car. The accused said – I panicked and ran home after the accident
The SSP said that after this we reached Amritpal and recovered the Fortuner car. During interrogation, the accused told that he was returning from Mukerian after selling his phone. When he reached near Beas Pind, an old man got hit by the car. Later it was found that the old man was Fauja Singh. At that time he got scared, so he fled. He had to come towards Jalandhar, but he went to his village. He has a license and he works as a laborer in Canada. He has a work permit till 2027. His father has died, while his mother lives in Canada. He died after being shifted to ICU: The son further told that there was some improvement in his condition and he himself had kept his hands under his head, but when he was shifted to ICU, he started having difficulty in breathing.
