Mumbai and Kohima are the safest for women in the country: Patna and Delhi are the least safe, NARI annual report

Kohima, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagar and Mumbai are the safest cities for women in the country. On the other hand, Patna, Jaipur, Faridabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Srinagar and Ranchi are the least safe cities for women. This information came out in the National Annual Report and Index on Women’s Safety (NARI) 2025. The report says that women in Kohima and other safest cities have more equality, civic participation, better police system and women-friendly infrastructure. On the other hand, the situation is the opposite in cities like Patna and Jaipur. This survey was conducted on 12 thousand 770 women from 31 cities. 6 out of 10 women surveyed said that they are safe in their city, while 40% consider it ‘not very safe’ or ‘unsafe’. Women feel less safe at night in public transport and places of visit. 86% of women in educational institutes feel safe only during the day. The feeling of safety reduces significantly at night or outside the campus. About 91% of women feel safe at the workplace. 2 out of 3 women do not complain of harassment
The survey revealed that only 25% of women have confidence in effective action on security-related complaints. 69% of women said that existing security measures are adequate to some extent. Only 65% ​​felt improvement in women’s safety during 2023-2024. 7% of women said that they experienced harassment in public places in 2024. This figure doubled to 14% among girls under the age of 24. Public transport (29%) and neighborhood (38%) were reported as the most frequent places of harassment. Yet only 1 in 3 victims reported the incident. The report says that 2 out of 3 women do not complain about harassment. This means that most of the incidents are not known to NCRB.
