According to the EC, the SIR process began in June 2025. 78.9 million registered voters were asked to re-fill their forms. Subsequently, the list was released on August 1st, where the names of 6.5 million voters were deleted. These 6.5 million voters are those who have died or have permanently moved out. Some of these voters also had two voter IDs. With the release of the final list, election preparations will intensify. The SIR process began on June 24, 2025. The SIR process was conducted in Bihar for the first time since 2003. It was initiated on June 24, 2025. Its primary objective was to remove fake voters, such as foreign nationals, duplicate voters, and relocated voters, from the list and to add new eligible voters. Forms were collected from 72.4 million voters. The first phase of the SIR was completed by July 25, 2025, achieving 99.8% coverage. According to data, 2.2 million voters have died. 3.6 million voters were not found at their homes. 700,000 people have become permanent residents in a new location. The Supreme Court ordered Aadhaar to be considered the 12th document. Initially, 11 documents were considered valid in Bihar’s SIR, but following the Supreme Court’s directive on September 8, the Aadhaar number was considered the 12th document. The Supreme Court had stated, “Aadhaar is a proof of identity, not citizenship.” The court had ordered the Election Commission to consider Aadhaar as the 12th document for voter identification. Why is the opposition protesting? The opposition alleges that this process is a conspiracy to deprive people of their voting rights. The opposition asks that at least five elections have been held in Bihar in the nearly 22 years since 2003. Were all those elections wrong? If the Election Commission was to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), why was it announced at the end of June? How and why was this decision made? Even if it is assumed that a SIR is needed, it could have been done comfortably after the Bihar elections. Why was the decision taken in such a hurry? Like Bihar, a SIR will be conducted nationwide. The EC announced on September 18 that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will be conducted nationwide, similar to Bihar, but in most states, more than half of the voters will not be required to show any documents. This is because their names are included in the previous SIR voter list. In most places, this process was completed between 2002 and 2004. Those whose names were on the voter list at that time will not need to provide any new documents to prove their date of birth or place of birth. Those who wish to become new voters will need to fill out a declaration form stating when they were born in India. Those born after 1987 will need to show their parents’ documents.
