The Kerala High Court on Thursday banned the release of the film “The Kerala Story 2.” The court directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to re-review the film after questions were raised about its censorship certificate. The film was scheduled to be released on Friday, February 27th. Some individuals filed a petition in the court, alleging that the film’s title and story could tarnish Kerala’s image. The petitioners stated that the film depicts issues such as forced religious conversions and terrorism, sending a negative message about Kerala as a whole and inciting public sentiment. The court had stated on Wednesday that it would review the film before deciding, but the producer refused to screen it. During the hearing, the court stated that Kerala enjoys interfaith harmony, but the film portrays such incidents as occurring throughout the state. The Censor Board stated that it had not approved the teaser. The film’s lawyer argued that the case was a public interest litigation, and the petitioners had not cited any personal harm. The petitioners responded that if many people had similar concerns, their concerns should be heard. There was also a debate regarding the teaser. The Censor Board stated that it had not approved the teaser or trailer, and therefore, was not responsible for the content posted on social media. The producer had refused to change the title. Producer Vipul Shah also opposed the change in the film’s title during the hearing on Wednesday. He said that the film depicts stories from three states, including Kerala. He said that the word “Goes Beyond” in the film’s title means that the story is not limited to Kerala, but also depicts events beyond that. The producer defended the title, stating that the film does not unfairly target Kerala. The Kerala High Court is hearing three petitions filed by three different individuals. These petitions sought a stay on the film’s release and the cancellation of the CBFC certificate. Why is The Kerala Story 2 in controversy?
