Bengal SIR – Final list includes over 70.4 million voters: 6.3 million people removed; final voter lists released for 11 states and UTs so far

Following the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, the final voter list has been published. The number of voters has dropped from 76.6 million to 70,459,284. This means that 6.36 million names have been removed from the SIR so far, representing 8.3% of the total electorate. Over 5.8 million names were removed from the draft list released in December. The CEO stated that the verification of the names of over 6 million voters is still ongoing. However, they have been added to the new voter list. The list may be changed later after a decision on these names is made. In the 2021 elections, the margin of victory in 166 out of 294 seats was less than 25,000. Of these, the TMC won 102, while the BJP won 64. Of the 36 seats with a margin of less than 5,000, the BJP won 22 and the TMC won 13. In such a scenario, every vote counts. However, the TMC won 108 out of 111 seats with margins of more than 25,000 and 43 seats with margins of more than 50,000. The voter verification process began in 12 states and Union Territories (UTs) on October 27, 2025, under the second phase of the SIR. So far, the final lists for 11 states and Union Territories have been published. The final list for Uttar Pradesh will be released on April 10. Elections in Bengal likely to be announced in the second week of March. The State Election Commission stated that the dates for the West Bengal Assembly elections are likely to be announced in the second week of March. Speculation is ongoing about the number of phases the elections will be held in. The official stated that voting could take place in three phases. Before the introduction of SIR, a total of 11,85,034 voters were registered in Goa. February 17 – After the final voter list of Gujarat, a total of 4,40,30,725 voters are registered in the state. February 14 – A total of 9,44,211 voters are registered in the Union Territory of Puducherry and a total of 57,607 voters are registered in Lakshadweep.
February 10: Final list published in Assam The EC released the final voter list under the Special Revision (SR) 2026 in Assam. According to the EC, more than 2.43 lakh names have been removed compared to the draft voter list. Now a total of 2,49,58,139 voters are registered in the state. The number of voters in the draft voter list was 2,52,01,624. Following the special revision process, 243,485 names were removed from the list.
