The eastern region of Bangladesh has witnessed the most devastating flood in 30 years. This has affected about 48 lakh people in 12 districts. So far 15 people have died. Thousands of houses were submerged in the flood due to which many families had to take shelter in other areas. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed concern over the flood in Bangladesh and offered help. The Pakistani PM wrote a letter to the Chief Advisor of the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, on Friday. Earlier, some leaders of the interim government including Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had also blamed India for this flood. Nahid Islam, the leader of the students who removed Sheikh Hasina from power, alleged that India released water without warning. Now Nahid is an advisor in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of Bangladesh. BNP party’s joint general secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that India deliberately opened the door of the Dumbur dam built on the Gomti river in Tripura, due to which such a severe flood occurred. This is not true.” The ministry said that the area around the Gomti river flowing through India and Bangladesh has received the highest rainfall this year. This has caused problems on both sides. The ministry also said that the Dumbur Dam is more than 120 kilometers away from the Bangladesh border. This is 234% more than the normal rainfall. In the year 1993, the highest rainfall of 247 mm was recorded in a day on 21 August. This year, 375.8 mm rainfall occurred in a day on 20 August. The record of 31 years was broken. Minister Nath said that whatever is being written and said on the issue of opening the gates of the Dambur dam is a rumour. This dam has been designed in such a way that when there is more water than a certain limit, it starts flowing out on its own. No gate of the dam has been opened.
