The selection of players in Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now being done with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi said on Tuesday that 80% of the 150 players of Champions Cup were selected by the computer. The selection committee selected only 20% players. Pakistan decided to start a new domestic tournament of ODI format Champions Cup this year. Top 150 players of the country will participate in it. Naqvi on Tuesday selected 5 different mentors for the 5 teams of Champions Cup. Misbah ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik and Waqar Younus will be the mentors of all the five teams. The contract of all will be for 3 years. However, the names of the squads and teams have not been finalized yet. Champions Cup will be played at Iqbal Stadium from 12 to 29 September. During the selection of the five mentors, Naqvi said, “The arrival of the Champions Cup will strengthen Pakistan’s domestic cricket. We will have a pool of 150 best players, out of which the top players will get a chance in the national team. After the T20 World Cup, the selection committee had to do a major surgery anyway, this surgery will be easier after the Champions Cup. People talked about changing 4-5 players in a single day after the defeat, but unless you have better players than them in your domestic cricket system. Naqvi further said, “150 players were selected for Champions Cup. Out of which 80% were selected by AI, while only 20% were selected by the selection committee. Now no one can challenge this selection. We gave only 20% importance to the selection committee. If the committee selects a bad player instead of a senior player, then you (spectators) will be the first to raise questions. We have records and we tried our best to keep transparency in team selection.” Good players will be found from Champions Cup
Naqvi further said, “Champions Cup will end in September itself, after which we will have the record of the best players. Players who do not perform will be replaced immediately. Here the decision will not be based on the opinion of 1 or 2 selectors.” Pakistan will play against England after Champions Cup
Naqvi did not clarify how the Pakistan cricket team will be selected after Champions Cup. However, after the tournament, the team will play a 3 Test series against England.
