35-year-old Jay Shah was elected chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday, 27 August. No one had applied against Shah for this post. In such a situation, there was no election and he was elected unopposed. He will replace the current chairman Greg Barclay. Jay will take over as chairman on December 1. He is currently the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). BCCI will now have to make a new posting for the post of secretary. The term of the current ICC chairman, New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, will end on November 30. The ICC had said on August 20 that Barclay would not become chairman for the third consecutive time. He was in this position since 2020. He will leave his post in November. Shah was the only candidate
The last date to file nomination for the post of ICC chairman was today. Apart from Jay, no other candidate filed nomination for the post. Shah is currently also a part of the ICC’s finance and commerce affairs sub-committee. Shah said – Thank you for electing me as chairman Jay Shah said, “Thank you everyone for electing me as the chairman of ICC. I will continue to work to promote cricket globally. At present, it is important to promote multiple formats of cricket. I will try to bring new technology to the game, as well as take events like the World Cup to the global market.” Shah further said, “Cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics 2028 is a big achievement. We will give it global recognition through the Olympics and try to take it to more countries.” Jay Shah will be the 5th Indian chief of ICC Before Shah, 4 Indians have held the post of ICC chief. Jagmohan Dalmiya was the chairman of ICC from 1997 to 2000, Sharad Pawar from 2000 to 2012, N Srinivasan from 2014 to 2015 and Shashank Manohar from 2015 to 2020. 35-year-old Jay Shah will turn 36 on September 22 this year. He will take over as ICC chairman on December 1 at the age of 36. He will be the 16th chairman of ICC, before him all 15 chairmen were above 55 years of age. Before Shah, South Africa’s Percy Sonn became president at the age of 56 in 2006. Shah, who is 20 years younger than him, will now become the youngest chairman of ICC at the age of 36.
