The interim government in Bangladesh on Wednesday lifted the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami party. Jamaat-e-Islami is the largest Muslim party in Bangladesh. The Hasina government had banned it on August 1. It was accused of inciting riots during the student movement. Bangladesh Home Ministry issued a notice saying that there is no evidence of Jamaat-e-Islami party and its allies being involved in terrorist activities. The High Court in 2013 had termed the manifesto of Jamaat-e-Islami party as a violation of the Constitution. After this, the party was banned from contesting elections. In 2018, the Election Commission also canceled the registration of Jamaat. Even though the interim government has lifted the ban on it, the ban on it contesting elections is still in force. Jamaat-e-Islami party leaders held a meeting with representatives of Indian Media Correspondents Association Bangladesh on Monday. During this, party lawyer Shishir Monir said that the party will file a petition in the Supreme Court next week to lift the ban on contesting elections. In the meeting, party leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also emphasized on the relations between India and Bangladesh. Shafiqur said, “Jamaat has had old relations with India. 75 cases have been registered against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh so far. According to the Bengali newspaper The Daily Star, 3 new cases were registered against Hasina in the Dhaka Court on Tuesday. Earlier, a murder case was registered against her in Bogura. Hasina has 63 murder cases, 7 genocide and crimes against humanity, 3 kidnapping and 2 other cases registered against her. An investigation is also going on against her in the International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh for the violence that took place during the student movement. Sheikh Hasina established the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in 2010. This tribunal was set up to investigate the violence that took place during the Bangladesh Independence Movement in 1971. Earlier, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus on Monday (26 August) released Jasimuddin Rahmani, the head of the radical organization Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), on parole. This group also has links with the terrorist organization Al Qaeda. The Sheikh Hasina government had banned Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) in 2015.
