Haryana wrestler Sakshi Malik’s auto-biography ‘Witness’ will be published later this year. Sakshi Malik herself has given this information on social media platform X. She wrote, ‘Very excited to share some news. My auto-biography is going to be published later this year. I have opened my heart in this book. I am as honest as possible.’ Sakshi Malik is the same female wrestler who protested against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Expressed desire for a biopic in 2022
After winning the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham in 2022, Sakshi Malik had said, “I want a biopic to be made on me, so that people know how a village girl traveled to the Olympic medal and is doing well now.” She reached the arena at the age of 3-4 years
Sakshi is a resident of Mokhra village in Rohtak district. She was born on September 3, 1992. There is a 60-year-old Shankar Akhara in the village, which was started by Madia Pahalwan in 1963. 89-year-old Madia is known as Guruji (coach) in the village. When Sakshi was about 3-4 years old, she used to go to Shankar Akhara with other children. That was probably her first association with wrestling. Sakshi started learning wrestling at the age of 12. However, her mother did not want her daughter to become a wrestler. Mother said- Girls used to wear small costumes while bout. That’s why I did not like wrestling. I tried a lot to explain to Sakshi that girls who are wrestlers do not get married. Started a sit-in against Brijbhushan in 2023
Last year on January 18, 2023, 30 wrestlers started a sit-in against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brijbhushan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment. Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia along with other wrestlers sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. During that time, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had ended the dharna by promising to form a committee. On 23 April, they again started a dharna at Jantar Mantar, demanding registration of FIR against Brij Bhushan and raising questions on the committee itself. On 30 May, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia reached Haridwar with their medals to flow them in the Ganga, but farmer leader Naresh Tikait stopped them. Sakshi retired from wrestling
After this, on 21 December 2023, Sanjay, a close aide of Brij Bhushan, was appointed as the new president of WFI. The wrestlers got angry again at this. Sakshi Malik retired from wrestling on the same day by keeping her shoes on the table. After this, Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri award. He had left this award on the footpath outside the Prime Minister’s house. A few days later, wrestler Vinesh Phogat returned the Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award.
