The fifth day of Paris Paralympics is proving to be medal winning for India. The country won 6 medals today, out of which 4 were in badminton. In the mixed team event of para archery, the pair of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar won the bronze medal. Before them, Nitesh Kumar won gold in the SL3 category and Suhas Yathiraj won the silver medal in the SL4 category in badminton. In the SU5 category of women’s badminton, India’s Thulasimathi Murugesan won silver and Manisha Ramdas won bronze medal. Earlier today, Yogesh Kathunia won the silver medal in discus throw. Yathiraj reached the final by defeating India’s Sukant Kadam in the semi-finals. Sukant lost 21-17, 21-18 against Freddy Setiawan of Indonesia in the bronze medal match. SL4 category includes those athletes who have difficulty walking with one or both legs. Rakesh and Sheetal lost the archery semi-final. India has faced defeat in the semi-final of archery. The world number-1 mixed doubles pair of Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi was defeated by the Iranian pair. After 4 ends, the score was tied at 152-152. In the tie-breaker, both teams scored 20-20 points, but the Iranian archer won as his shot was closer to 10. Murugesan lost the match in straight games. In the women’s SU5 category, India’s Thulasimati Murugesan faced China’s QX Yang in the final. Yang won the first game 21-17. In the second game too, Yang put pressure and took a lead of 11-5, he won the game 21-10 and won the gold medal. Murugesan had to be content with silver. On the other hand, Manisha Ramdas of India won the bronze medal in the SU5 category. She won the bronze medal by defeating Denmark’s Katherine Rosengren in straight games by a margin of 21-12, 21-8. His best jump was 2.00 meters. Nishad won silver in the T-47 category. It includes those athletes whose limbs below the elbow do not work. Preeti won the bronze medal in the 200 meter women’s T-35 category race. She secured the third position with a personal best time of 30.01 meters. China’s Jia Zhou got the gold and Qian Guo got the silver medal. Preeti also won the bronze medal in the 100 meter race. She is the first player to win 2 Paralympic medals for India in track events. Para shooter Rubina Francis won the bronze medal in the SH1 category of Women’s 10 meter air pistol on the third day, Saturday, 31 August. He scored 211.1 in the final.
