Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has once again become the Prime Minister of the country. On Monday, the Japanese Parliament has elected him as the next Prime Minister. Parliamentary elections were held in Japan on 27 October. Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lost the majority in this election. LDP got only 191 seats in the parliamentary election and lost 65 seats. This was the party’s worst performance in the last 15 years. A special session of Parliament was called on Monday, 11 November. For the first time in the last 30 years, voting took place for the election of the Prime Minister in Japan. Ishiba defeated the main opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda 221-160 on the strength of support from other parties. However, a figure of 233 is required for a majority in the 465-seat Parliament. Ishiba had refused to step down after losing the election. Ishiba had offered an alliance with other parties. In the new government, most of the ministers of the previous cabinet will be reappointed. However, 3 ministers have lost their seats in the election. New members will take their place. Democratic Party of Japan chief Yoshihiko Noda tried to form an opposition coalition against Ishiba. However, Noda was not successful in this attempt. Due to lack of absolute majority in the parliament, Ishiba may face difficulties in running the government. Corruption revelations caused losses This is the first time since 2009 that LDP has not got majority. According to BBC, the reason behind not getting majority is LDP leaders being embroiled in many scandals. This is the reason why LDP’s popularity has been continuously declining. Earlier this year, LDP’s approval rating fell below 20%. What were the corruption allegations LDP’s party MPs were accused of embezzling the money of political donations received by the party. They transferred the party’s money to their own account by tampering with the account. After the matter was revealed, PM Kishida removed several cabinet ministers and others from their posts. However, this did not calm the public anger. Due to this, Fumio Kishida had to resign from the post of Prime Minister. The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), the biggest rival of the LDP, performed better. CDP leader Yoshihiko Noda said that he is trying to form a coalition to remove the current government. The CDP alliance currently has 163 seats and is far from forming a government. Record number of women candidates won According to NHK News, this time women have succeeded in becoming MPs with record votes in Japan. This time 73 women won in the 465-seat House. In the 2021 elections, only 45 women were able to win the election. ————————————- Also read this news related to Ishiba….
