PM Modi’s address in Guyana’s Parliament: Said- Came to Guyana as a curious person 24 years ago, still remembers the chutney here

Prime Minister Modi is on a 2-day visit to Guyana. On the last day of the visit, on Thursday, he reached Guyana to address the Parliament. During his address, PM Modi said that India has a deep relationship of soil, sweat and hard work with Guyana. PM said that the history of both the countries has been similar. In the last 200 to 250 years, India and Guyana have seen the era of slavery and freedom struggle together. About 180 years ago an Indian came to the land of Guyana, and since then the relationship between India and Guyana has always been full of intimacy in happiness and sorrow. During this, he said that democracy is included in our DNA. He said that India is performing its duty as a world brother. PM said that he got a chance to come to Guyana as a seeker 24 years ago. During this, Modi also mentioned the chutney of Guyana. He said that he cannot forget the chutney of Guyana. Modi took part in Kirtan Dominica and Guyana gave highest honour to PM Modi PM Modi has been honoured with ‘The Dominica Award of Honour’ by the Caribbean country Dominica in Guyana. Dominica’s President Sylvanie Berton honoured PM Modi with the highest honour of her country. PM Modi has been given this award for delivering vaccines to Dominica during the Covid-19 pandemic. Guyana also honoured Modi with its highest national honour ‘Order of Excellence’ and Barbados honoured him with Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados. He dedicated the award to all Indians. Apart from this, during his two-day visit to Guyana, PM Modi also participated in the second India-CARICOM summit with representatives of Caribbean countries. Apart from the summit, the Prime Minister held bilateral discussions with representatives of Caribbean countries. Apart from Guyana’s President Mohammad Irfan, PM Modi held formal talks with other leaders including Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Suriname’s President Chan Santokhi. After the talks, PM Modi and President Irfan also addressed the people. The President of Guyana said- PM Modi’s presence here is the biggest honor for us. He is a champion among leaders. Modi has shown great leadership. He has shown light to the developing world. He has adopted the method of development, which many people are adopting in their country. Modi thanked President Irfan for welcoming him to Guyana. He said that President Irfan has a special relationship with India. He is the brand ambassador of the Indian community. The PM said that he has come to Guyana after almost 24 years. Earlier, he had come to Guyana as a common man for a personal visit. This is the visit of an Indian PM to Guyana after 56 years. Earlier, PM Modi reached Guyana on Wednesday morning after the G20 Summit meeting in Brazil. In the capital Georgetown, Guyana’s President Mohammad Irfan and Prime Minister Antony Phillips broke protocol and reached the airport to welcome him. About a dozen cabinet ministers also welcomed PM Modi along with them. He was also given a guard of honour at the airport itself. PM Modi will be honoured with the highest national award ‘The Order of Excellence’ in Guyana. Apart from this, Barbados will also honour him with the ‘Honorary Award of Freedom of Barbados’. PM Modi will be on a state visit to Guyana on 20 and 21 November. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Guyana in 56 years. Before him, Indira Gandhi visited Guyana in 1968. PM Modi will address a special meeting of the Parliament of Guyana. He will also attend the CARICOM-India summit. After the discovery of oil and gas mines in Guyana in the year 2020, its GDP is growing at a rate of about 40% annually. Due to this, it has become a centre of trade and investment. In such a situation, during the Guyana visit, a deal related to energy and defense resources can be made between PM Modi and Guyana President Mohammed Irfan Ali. 40% of Guyana’s population is of Indian origin. The ancestors of President Mohammed Irfan Ali himself were brought to the Caribbean country by British ship. In January last year, Guyana President Mohammed Irfan Ali came to India as the chief guest for the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan. Vice President Bharat Jagdev also visited India in February 2023. In February this year, Guyana Prime Minister Mark Phillips also visited India. Guyana has reserves of natural gas and oil. Guyana is a member of CARICOM, a group of 21 Caribbean countries. This group works to promote economic, political, and social integration among Caribbean countries. Guyana is also called the “granary of the Caribbean”. At the same time, Guyana’s strategic location also increases due to its proximity to the Panama Canal. According to the World Bank report, Guyana has about 11.2 billion barrels of oil reserves and 17 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. In 2020, after getting natural gas and oil reserves, the per capita income here increased to more than $ 18,199. Guyana and India Relations
The Indian Commission was established in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, in May 1965. Indira Gandhi visited here in 1968, just two years after Guyana gained independence. In 1988, the then Vice President Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma and in 2006, the then Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat went on a state visit to Guyana. The total mutual trade between India and Guyana in 2023-24 was US $ 105.97 million. During this period, India exported $ 99.36 million to Guyana. As of May 2024, Guyana was producing about 645,000 barrels of crude oil and gas. In view of this, ONGC Videsh, the branch of Oil and Natural Gas, is also constantly looking for opportunities here. Earlier this year, India approved a five-year MoU with Guyana to cooperate in hydrocarbons, including sourcing of crude oil. Guyana’s Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud, has described Modi’s visit to Guyana as an important milestone in the relations between the world’s two fastest growing economies. Energy and defense agreements are expected to be signed between the two countries on this visit.
