After winning the US presidential election, Donald Trump has included Elon Musk in his team. He has given the responsibility of the Department of Government Efficiency (DoGE) to Musk and Ramaswami. DoGE is a new department, which will advise the government from outside. Trump said – I am happy to tell you that both these wonderful Americans will work for my administration to eliminate bureaucracy, cut wasteful expenditure, eliminate unnecessary rules and reorganize federal agencies. This is necessary for our ‘Save America’ agenda. Musk said – The new department will save the government $2 trillion. After getting the responsibility of the new department, Musk had said that he would be able to cut at least $2 trillion (168 lakh crores) in government expenditure through the new department. However, some experts are calling it impossible. According to the Washington Post, Musk will be able to do this only if he cuts important programs like defense budget or social security. Trump had proposed the formation of DoGE in early September. Earlier in August, he had said that if he becomes president, he would consider giving Musk a position in the cabinet or the role of an advisor in his administration. After this, Musk had said that he is ready to take up this responsibility. Musk has described this project as ‘America’s last chance’ on social media. He claimed that without this the country would go bankrupt. He claimed that New York Metropolitan spent Rs 6.5 crore on fire alarms. Musk also alleged that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases spent more than 4 crores ‘to research HIV in transgender monkeys’. This is a waste of money. Musk said that the functioning of DoGE will be posted online to bring transparency in the system.
