Interview of PV Sindhu’s Arjun Awardee father: Private academies dominate India, they don’t even take suggestions from Sindhu, coaches are just earning money

‘PV Sindhu has won many medals at the world level. No player has won as many till now. Even after playing so much, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) does not ask Sindhu for any suggestions. She is my daughter, that’s why I am not saying. She is a big player.’ ‘She knows about the game and the problems of the players. In such a situation, the game will have to be taken forward by taking advice from big players including PV Sindhu. To polish the players and make them like Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and Saina Nehwal, the entire system needs to be improved.’ This is what PV Sindhu’s father PV Ramanna has to say. Two-time Olympic medalist and World Championship gold medalist Sindhu is playing the Syed Modi International Championship in Lucknow. Her father PV Ramanna is also in Lucknow with her. Dainik Bhaskar had a special conversation with PV Ramanna. PV Ramanna spoke openly about the current state of badminton in India, the struggle of the players, private academies dominating the game and coaches who have adopted a selfish nature and are making money instead of preparing players. Read the full interview… Question: How did PV Sindhu become a big player, what things did you keep in mind?

Answer: Not every player is a bigger player than before. The sacrifice of the father and mother is behind this. For this, one has to take out time and take the daughter to the stadium. In today’s time, the coach is not able to give full time. The coach teaches 50 players, but he has to understand from the game of the children, who will play well. Parents should also know from 50 people how well their child is doing. His standard should be known through this. Only then can there be improvement. Question: You are an Arjun Awardee, you have been a volleyball player, how did Sindhu get inclined towards badminton?

Answer: The player should have interest. Volleyball is a team game. No matter how well you play, there is some excuse to cut you down, but this does not happen in individual games. In this, you have to show your ability and you have to move forward. Both my daughters used to play, but Sindhu showed more interest. Sindhu even today goes to the ground and practices very sincerely. I don’t see this in many players. Because of this our standard is not improving. Along with this players have to be motivated. In today’s time people say that we have played badminton, now we will become coaches. In today’s time many coaches say, I have made Sindhu, Saina and Lakshya but why only 5, bring 50. Coaches say we have made them players. This should be stopped. Question: In the initial stage players are compared with coaches and big players?
Answer: You can compare with big players, but let the girl or son win in some format of Olympics, Asian Championship, National, World Championship. Then compare them. Let them practice so much that they can become Sindhu or Saina. Question: What measures should parents and coaches take so that children do not deviate from their goals?
Answer: Children do not know anything. We have to motivate them. Sometimes to take them to the stadium and sometimes to do stretching. If they do this for a few months, enthusiasm will also develop in them. Sports will not be neglected along with studies. Look at Sindhu, she has passed 10th, 12th, B.Com in first class. Now she has also done MBA. She is good in studies. Players are also good in studies. Question: Sindhu definitely looks at her father while playing, do you give her tips?
Answer: I have been watching the game for the last 20 years. I have given volleyball coaching. In Andhra, five people play wall badminton with a woolen ball. There is a net. Strokes are hit with hands in it. What I mean to say is that the idea works in this way. Ask me about badminton related things from around the world, I will tell you. After the match, we both talk. Sindhu started slow in the first two matches of Syed Modi, I will tell you. Son, you started slow. Or you should have played fast here. All these aspects are discussed. Question: We did not get a medal in Paris Olympics, do you also miss this?

Answer: Every player cannot win everywhere. It was our bad luck that on 27th October, PV Sindhu got injured in MCL. Sindhu did not play for four months there. Just like Carolina Mary had a knee injury. In such a situation, 6 months are required to recover from it. Sindhu did not play from November to March, she improved in three months, but that rhythm did not come. But God gives what he has to give. It is God’s grace that now fitness has returned. Currently she is preparing for India Open, Malaysia, Indonesia and other tournaments. Question: How do you see the increased competition in private academies?

Answer: Children are giving preference to academies in the name of players. Children have to understand that they should stay where they are doing well. The coach should give preference to the children of his academy, but now it is happening that if a child plays well, they start calling him to themselves. Sindhu says give me a coach in Hyderabad, I will practice here. The junior lot that is coming should be sent to Guwahati stadium by organizing a national camp. They should practice there. In private academies, coaches are running after TA, DA and money. Players of one academy do not talk to players of other academy from heart. When players go out, players of other private academies do not go for practice. Coaches stop them. They scare the players. Apart from four-five players, there is no name in badminton right now. If everyone works selfishly, then work will not be done. In today’s time, Indian coaches are saying that they are bringing foreign coaches. Give us one too, but they have neither won in Olympics nor World Championship. First make players, then talk. Sindhu’s coach has been at fourth position twice in Olympics. He has three gold medals in Asian Games. Apart from this, she has defeated big players of the world. World Tour Finals is next month, Krishna and Gayatri have been selected, but winning is not that easy. Question: Are the players being expected to do well for the next Olympics?
Question: For the next Olympics, it is being said that this player will win, that player will win, but nothing can be said right now. Coaches are overthinking. Badminton is a game that changes in a day. Some players are good who can be made. Right now Unnati Hooda, Anmol Kharab, Shreya, Tanvi Patri are also good girls. By tackling these players correctly, results will be achieved in 4-5 years. For this, one will have to come to the ground 365 days. This has to be kept in mind. ——————- Also read: PB Sindhu likes Lucknow’s kebab very much: She said – Gave 100% in Paris Olympics, the game is still left; Strength is necessary for athletes.
