When legendary singer Udit Narayan dreamt of becoming a singer in his childhood, his father felt that a farmer’s son cannot become a singer. His father Harekrishna Jha wanted him to do farming or think of becoming a doctor or engineer. Udit Narayan’s mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi is a folk singer. She had faith in her son that one day her son will become a great singer. Udit Narayan has sung 25 thousand songs in 40 different languages. Even today at the age of 69, his voice has the same freshness. Udit says that my mother is 106 years old. Even today she keeps singing at home. I always get inspired by listening to her singing. Today Udit Narayan is celebrating his 69th birthday. On this occasion, he had a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar. Let’s know what he said during the conversation in his own words I learned singing by listening to songs on the radio. I used to listen to the songs of Lata Mangeshkar, Rafi Saheb and Kishore Kumar on the radio. At that time, radio used to be only in the house of the village head or some big man. I learned singing by listening to songs on the radio from a distance. My mother used to sing in the houses of the village. I got the inspiration of singing from her. Father wanted me to become a doctor or an engineer. Father was very angry with my singing. He used to say that study and become a doctor or engineer. You are the son of a farmer. It is not possible for a farmer’s son to go to Mumbai and become a singer. Therefore, it is useless to dream about it. Singing as a hobby is a different thing, but how can a career be made in it. I used to earn 4-5 rupees by singing in fairs. I used to go and sing in small fairs in the village. My elder brother Digambar Jha used to take me to the fair across the river by sitting on his shoulders. I used to get 4-5 rupees. I got a lot of happiness in this money. I used to sing even when there was a holiday in school. I studied till 10th from Bihar, but I was not able to understand what to do in life. I started with Nepal Radio. During that time, I went to sing at a minister’s place. He was very impressed after listening to the song. He said that if you want to sing Maithili folk songs for Nepal Radio, then I can recommend you. After that I went to Kathmandu and joined the radio. I also studied 12th there. I used to sing on the radio during the day. I used to study at night and also go to five star hotels to sing. I used to get some money from there, which was enough for living. In this way 7-8 years passed there. I could not believe it when I got a chance with Rafi sahab. I came to Mumbai in 1978 and learnt classical music from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here. I had classes in the evening. During the day I used to go to meet all the music directors in their studios. I got my first chance to sing with legendary singer Mohammad Rafi sahab in the film ‘Unnis-Bees’. For me it was no less than a dream. I could not believe that I would get a chance to sing with the person whom I have been listening to since childhood. It was my good fortune to sing with Lata Mangeshkar. After the film ‘Unnis Bees’, I was not getting the songs I wanted. There was a lot of struggle from 1978 to 1988. During this time, I used to get to sing 2-4 lines in films. After I got ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, I never looked back. I have sung so many songs with Lata Mangeshkar in my career. I don’t think any singer of my generation has sung as many songs. I have got the opportunity to sing in many films like Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Veer Zaara. I consider this my good fortune. It is said that a woman has a huge contribution in a man’s success. Udit Narayan’s wife Deepa Narayan has had a huge contribution in his career. On Udit Narayan’s birthday, his wife and singer Deepa Narayan spoke to Dainik Bhaskar… I thought what would Udit ji be able to sing? I was an air hostess. I was also fond of singing. I wanted to release a music album in Nepali. The music director introduced me to Udit ji. I did not know him till then. He was very thin. I thought how would he be able to sing because he was so thin? But when he sang, I was surprised to hear his voice. That album in Nepali language turned out to be a super hit. After this, people came from Nepal and started recording albums in the voice of Udit ji and me. One day he said that he would keep me in his pocket. Udit ji had started liking me in his heart. One day he was staring at me during the recording. I thought why was he staring at me like that? One day he told me that he would keep me in his pocket. I did not understand what he wanted to say. Then he said that he would keep me in his heart and would love me. I thought that if he is a good person and a good singer, I should marry him. When Udit ji became established, I left my job and continued working even after marriage. There is no guarantee of when you will get success in the film line. I was thinking that I should leave the job after Udit ji gets established. When ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ became a hit and Udit ji’s career started, I left the job. During this time, my son Aditya Narayan was born. Udit ji often talked to me about leaving the job. The day would be spent in serving Aditya and my in-laws. Anyway, it was difficult to find time for the job. Still, I told Udit ji to first buy a good flat and maintain some bank balance. After that, I will leave the job. I used to live with 7-8 boys in one room Before marriage, I had taken a small flat in Kalina Santacruz. After marriage, Udit ji shifted to the same flat with me. When Udit ji came to Mumbai, he used to live as a paying guest with 9-10 boys in one room in Mahalaxmi. During his struggle, he must have changed 7-8 houses. Our life started from the flat in Kalina. That is why we have not sold that flat till date. When he became a hero in a Nepali film, he started getting offers in Hindi films too. When Udit ji was struggling for singing, he got a chance to act in a Nepali film ‘Kusume Rumal’. In this film, I was offered to be the heroine and Udit ji was offered to be the hero. I did not act, but Udit ji did the film and that film became a super hit. However, Udit ji was not interested in acting. I was the one who encouraged him to act. Because at that time money was very much needed. After this, he did another Nepali film. In which he had a double role. Later, he started getting offers to act in Hindi films too, but I felt that one should not keep one’s feet in two boats. If Udit ji wanted to become a singer, then he should become one there. He became so busy that he did not get a chance to eat. It was God’s grace that after the film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, Udit ji became very busy. At that time, he used to record at least 8-10 songs in a day. There were many shows too. Sometimes I didn’t even get time to eat. I used to feed him with my own hands in the car. Even after becoming successful, Udit ji is as humble as he was before. Whatever I make and give him with my own hands, he eats with great love. I design his clothes too. I always get inspired by listening to my mother’s singing. The same freshness is seen in Udit Narayan’s singing in the last 41 years. He gives the credit for this to his mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi. Recently, during an interview, Udit Narayan had said- My mother is 106 years old. Even today she keeps singing at home. I always get inspired by listening to her singing. If she can sing at this age, then why can’t I? This thought inspires me to sing better. 5-time Filmfare Award winner Udit Narayan has received Filmfare Award 5 times. He first received Filmfare Award for the superhit song ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ from the film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. Deepa Narayan says, ‘When we went for this award, Udit ji was very nervous. Receiving this award was a very emotional moment in our life. That day I took Udit ji to dinner, but he could not eat due to happiness. Awarded with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan In 2009, Udit Narayan was honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India for his significant contribution to the world of music. In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. Four-time winner of National Film Awards, Udit Narayan received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2001 for ‘Mitwa’ from the film ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Jaane Kyun Log’ from ‘Dil Chahta Hai’.
