On December 3, President Yoon Suk Yol declared emergency martial law in South Korea. The President accused the opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and being involved in activities that topple the government. President Yoon made this announcement in a televised address to the nation. With this, the ongoing political tension in South Korea has increased further. Yoon’s People’s Power Party has been in power since May 2022. The opposition Democratic Party is opposing the policies of the government. This is the first time since 1980 that martial law has been declared in South Korea. Martial law has been imposed in the country at a time when there is a difference of opinion between the government and the opposition party in Parliament over the budget bill. There were protests from the streets to the parliament in the capital Seoul. Voting has been held against this decision in Parliament. Helicopters have been deployed over the parliament. The army has taken several opposition MPs into custody. There was a clash between protesters and police outside the South Korean Parliament in protest against the imposition of martial law.
