Father was against Sushmita’s participation in Miss India: Told, got the dress made by buying curtain cloth from Sarojini market, did not let mother watch the finale

In 1994, Sushmita Sen became the first Indian to win Miss Universe and her name was recorded in history. However, this journey was not easy for her. Recently, Sushmita talked about the struggles of her journey in Shipra Neeraj’s session Rising Above the Odds. She told that her father was angry with her for going to Miss India. At the same time, her mother had made her finale dress from curtain cloth. Sushmita said that she had filled the Miss India form on her mother’s insistence. When her mother informed her father about this, he did not talk to her for two days. He wanted Sushmita to focus on studies to become an IPS officer. Sushmita told that her mother somehow convinced her father. However, he put a condition that all the preparations should be done in the budget he was giving. Sushmita said, with the budget I had got, I could only do shopping from Sarojini Nagar. We went to the shops with hangers on the streets, from there my mother bought some clothes without asking me, curtain cloth was also included in it. She picked up an English magazine and went to the petticoat tailor below the building. She showed a picture and said, make this dress for my daughter, she has to wear it on stage. The petticoat tailor made my gown, in which I won Miss India. Mumma made my gloves by putting elastic in socks. Mother could not see Miss India crowning because of Sushmita Sushmita told that she could not do anything special in the first 4 rounds of Miss India, while Aishwarya was winning every round. Her mother was leaving for Goa to see her when she called and refused. Sushmita said that she has lost all the rounds, she will not be seen in any competition, in such a situation she will not like it if her mother is in front of her. Accepting Sushmita’s words, her mother stayed in Bombay. Sushmita reached the top-5 in the competition, but she was sure that she would not win. When she heard that Aishwarya Rai came second, Sushmita regretted saying that she could not even come second. However, later her name was announced as the winner. Let us tell you that after winning Miss India, Sushmita Sen became the first Indian to win the title of Miss Universe.
