Violence erupted in Manipur as soon as free traffic movement started after about 2 years in Kuki and Meitei dominated areas. As soon as buses started running on the roads connecting Imphal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Vishnupur and Senapati on Saturday, people of the Kuki community started protesting against it. A male protester died in a clash between security forces and protesters, while 25 others were injured. The deceased has been identified as Lalgothang Singsit (30 years). Lalgothang was injured by a bullet during the clash. He died while being taken to the hospital. The Kuki-Jo Council has held the government responsible for today’s violence by issuing a press release. The protesters laid stones on the roads to stop the movement. Trees were cut and felled on the roads. Roads were blocked by parking vehicles at many places. Buses and cars were set on fire. To stop the people indulging in violence, security forces resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells. In response, the protesters pelted stones. There are also reports of pellet guns being used by the security forces. In some pictures and videos, marks of pellet guns are visible on the bodies of the injured. Kuki Council said in its press release – More than 50 women have been injured in the clash. Our resolve has become even stronger due to the use of force by security personnel. The council supports peace but imposing peace will lead to resentment and conflict. We urge the government to reconsider this decision. The council cannot guarantee the free movement of the Meitei people. We will not be responsible for any untoward incident.
