Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is often in the news for his statements. Recently, he has objected to the smoking warning shown on the screen to show characters consuming drugs in the film. He says that such warnings bother the audience. In a conversation with ‘Indiewire’, Anurag Kashyap said, ‘In mood-driven films like Sinners, warnings related to smoking and drinking take the audience away from the deep experience that the filmmaker has created with great effort. This destroys the mood and build-up process of the film. Not only this, viewers on X platforms have also shared similar feelings. This is not the first time that Kashyap has objected to the smoking disclaimer from the CBFC. Earlier, in the year 2013, he had objected to the board’s demand to include these disclaimers in his film Ugly. Despite taking the matter to the court, the case kept dragging on, the film got leaked and finally he had to release the film with those disclaimers. Anurag Kashyap said, I had sued the censor board for keeping these disclaimers in my 2013 film ‘Ugly’. I had argued that this is a fundamental threat to artistic expression. The matter dragged on for a long time and finally we had to give up that fight and release the film after its pirated version. He says, a filmmaker makes many efforts to engage the audience in the film. Scenes, songs and other nuances are used in this. But before the audience can feel that experience, the shocking ad in the film affects those experiences.
