The body of Mohammad Asif Qamar, a B.Tech third year student, was found hanging from a noose on Sunday (May 4) in Madan Mohan Malviya Hostel of IIT Kharagpur. Asif was a student of civil engineering and hailed from Sitamarhi district of Bihar. According to the college management, the security had informed about the death of the student at around 3 pm. On information, the police came to the hostel. The door of Asif’s room was broken and his body was taken out. The case seems to be of suicide. Police is investigating. This is the fourth case of student death in the last one year at IIT Kharagpur. The last 3 cases were of suicide. Three students had committed suicide between January and June 2024. After this, the institute had taken initiatives like 24×7 counseling facility for the students and putting QR code outside the room. Amidst the increasing incidents of suicide, a committee has now been formed. Which will report in three days why these incidents are happening and what steps should be taken to stop them. A Nepali student was found hanging from a fan in her room at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar on Thursday. The student has been identified as Prasa Saha (18 years). She was a B.Tech Science student. There was no comment from KIIT officials on the student’s death. Police Commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh said that the Nepali Embassy in Delhi has been informed about the student’s death. Prasa’s parents have also been informed about this. Prasa’s postmortem will be done after their arrival. In the initial investigation, the case seems to be a suicide. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arjuna Rana Deuba wrote on Twitter that talks are going on with the Indian and Odisha governments to know the truth of Preesa’s death. Earlier in February, another Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal had also committed suicide in KIIT. Suspicion arose when the door was not opened during attendance. Police said that the hostel officials were taking attendance of the students at around 7 pm. When they knocked on the door of room number 111, there was no response from inside. Suspicious, they informed the police. When the police opened the hostel room, Preesa’s body was found hanging from the fan. There was a protest in February over the suicide of a Nepali student. Earlier in Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), on February 16, the body of B.Tech third year student Prakriti Lamsal was found in the hostel. It was said that she had committed suicide. Other international students of the college protested against the university administration over the death of the student. The students alleged that an Indian student from the same batch as Prakriti was harassing her. It was claimed that the student was the girl’s boyfriend. The students say that even after the complaints, the university did not take any action against the accused. The students also alleged that the university tried to suppress the matter. On the complaint of the girl’s cousin, the police arrested the accused Indian student. A case of abetment to suicide was registered against him. Apart from this, about 10 others were also arrested. These included three directors of the university. To investigate this matter, the Odisha government had constituted a high level fact finding committee comprising the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, Principal Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department and Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Higher Education Department. The students had accused the college administration of expelling them. After the incident, the Nepali students studying in the university had accused the college administration of suppressing the matter. The students had said that on the night of the incident, we went to the international office of the university and sat on a dharna throughout the night. The next day we were expelled from the hostel. A student said that we were protesting. University staff members came and asked us to vacate the hostel. Those who were not packing their belongings quickly were beaten. We were forcibly made to vacate the hostel.
