US President Donald Trump has withheld the funds worth Rs 19 thousand crores to the United Nations (UN). Some of this money is also from the tenure of the Biden administration. Due to Trump not giving the funds, the UN is on the verge of bankruptcy. The budget crisis is so serious that if the situation does not change, then after 5 months there will be no money to pay the salaries of the employees. Due to the budget crisis, the UN is planning to lay off 3000 employees from many of its departments. Apart from this, the UN will reduce the number of personnel in countries like Nigeria, Pakistan and Libya by 20 percent. Let us tell you that the total budget of the UN for 2025 is about 32 thousand crores. If the fund is not given, then America will not have the right to vote till 2027 If the US does not pay its necessary financial assistance this year also, then by 2027 it may lose the right to vote in the United Nations General Assembly. According to Article 19 of the UN Charter, any member country that does not pay its mandatory membership fee for two years loses the right to vote in the General Assembly. Countries like Iran, Venezuela have lost voting rights due to non-payment of mandatory payments. However, if this happens, the credibility of the UN can also be affected. China’s share in the UN budget is 20%. China delayed giving its share last year. In 2024, its funds came on 27 December. The UN could not spend that fund. As per the rules, if the money is not spent, it has to be returned to the member countries. Last year, 41 countries owed an amount of Rs 7 thousand crores. The money received by the United Nations is decided according to the economic capacity of the member countries. This funding should usually be received at the beginning of the year i.e. in January, but in 2024, about 15% of the payment did not come till December. In 2024, an amount of Rs seven thousand crores remained outstanding on 41 countries. This includes countries like America, Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela. This year so far only 49 countries have made the payment on time. The rest of the countries have maintained silence regarding the fund. Last year, the 80-year old organization United Nations suffered a direct loss of Rs 1,660 crores at the budget and cash level. This loss occurred when the UN had spent only 90 percent of its total budget. According to UN’s internal audit, if the agency does not make cuts, then the loss could go up to Rs 20 thousand crores by the end of this year. ———————————- Read this news related to UN as well… Closed door meeting held in UN on India-Pak tension: No resolution came after the talks, PAK said – our objective was accomplished A closed door meeting was held between India and Pakistan in the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) late on Monday night.
