Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service went down across the country on Monday (May 12) due to technical issues. Due to this outage, users are facing problems in making payments through digital payment platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. According to Down Detector, a platform that gives real-time status of websites and online services, problems started coming from around 5 pm. At the same time, the maximum number of 913 complaints were registered at 7 pm. The most trouble from 5 pm to 8 pm was about 31% of the people facing problems in making payments. About 31% of the people faced problems in making payments. 47% of the people had problems in transferring funds and about 21% had problems in making purchases. Many users are also complaining about UPI service being down on social media platforms. On making payment from Paytm, an error message is appearing, ‘UPI app is facing some problems’. This is the third time in the last one month that UPI service has gone down. UPI is operated by NCPI. In India, the operation of RTGS and NEFT payment systems is with RBI. Systems like IMPS, RuPay, UPI are operated by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI). The government had made a zero-charge framework mandatory for UPI transactions from 1 January 2020. How UPI works For UPI service, you have to create a virtual payment address. After this, it has to be linked to the bank account. After this, there is no need to remember your bank account number, bank name or IFSC code etc. The person making the payment simply processes the payment request according to your mobile number. If you have his UPI ID (e-mail ID, mobile number or Aadhaar number), then you can easily send money through your smartphone. Not only money but you can also make utility bill payments, online shopping and purchases through the Unified Payment Interface system.
