Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service provider in Bangladesh, has started its services from Tuesday. Mohammad Yunus, the head of the interim government in Bangladesh, congratulated the people of the country for this. He wrote in a Facebook post – Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency internet has become available in the country with two packages. In one plan, people will have to spend 6000 taka (4,203 Indian rupees) and in the other plan, 4200 taka (2,942 Indian rupees). However, to get the setup of Starlink, they will have to spend 47000 taka (32,930 Indian rupees) separately. In this, they will get antenna and modem. Users will get speed up to 300 mbps with unlimited data in these plans. High speed internet even in remote areas Yunus has said about Starlink that it has been kept away from politics. In March, he had said that even if any political crisis arises in the country in future, it will not affect the Starlink service. Last year in July, during the student movement, the internet was banned across the country. Yunus was referring to this. Starlink is a satellite-based internet service. This means that it does not depend on ground wires and towers, but provides internet through satellites revolving in the sky. Because of this, it can provide internet throughout Bangladesh, even in villages and remote areas (such as Sundarbans). Although it is not yet clear in which areas this service will be available initially, but it is expected that it will work across the country. Users’ expenses will increase 5 times Starlink service is not cheap. In Bangladesh, a user usually uses a plan of Rs 600-650 to use free internet for a month. He will have to spend 5 times more for Starlink. In such a situation, it is expensive for the common people, but it is very useful in places where internet does not reach. Apart from this, it can continue to work even in situations like flood, storm or internet block. The company faced a lot of difficulties in bringing Starlink to Bangladesh. Initially, the Hasina government and BTRC (Department of Telecom) were not interested in it. Along with this, local internet companies also raised the question that when they are there, why is Starlink needed? Yunus gave 90 days’ time, started in 56 days However, in February 2025 this year, there was a phone conversation between Elon Musk and Mohammad Yunus. During this, there was a discussion about bringing Starlink to Bangladesh. After this, on March 25, Yunus ordered that the Starlink service should start within 90 days. However, it started in the country in just 56 days. According to Starlink, its service is available in 130 countries around the world. Talks are also going on to bring it in India. According to many reports, it can also be launched in India in the year 2025. Know about Starlink in 4 questions and answers… Question 1- What is Starlink? Answer- Starlink provides internet through satellite. It has the largest satellite network of more than 7 thousand satellites in the low orbit of the Earth. Streaming, online gaming, video calls can be done easily through Starlink Internet. In this, the company provides a kit which includes a router, power supply, cable and mounting tripod. For high-speed internet, the dish is placed under the open sky. Starlink’s app is available on iOS and Android, which does everything from setup to monitoring. Question 2- How is it different? Answer- Companies like Jio and Airtel provide internet through fiber optics, mobile towers. Starlink is based on satellite network. It works through small satellites, ground stations and user terminals. It does not require physical infrastructure. Question 3- Is its speed higher? Answer- Starlink’s satellites are closer to the earth (550 km) than traditional satellite internet service. This provides faster internet. Starlink claims that it provides speed up to 150 Mbps, which is less than fiber broadband but better than traditional satellite internet. Question 4- Is Starlink a challenge for internet companies? Answer- Starlink and other satcom services are not competitors for traditional internet companies, but are complementary services to them. However, their cost is high. Starlink plans are up to 18 times more expensive than existing broadband plans. If the government wants, it can help reduce prices by using the Universal Service Obligation Fund in the Digital India scheme. How does internet reach you through satellites? Satellites make beam internet coverage possible from any part of the earth. Users get high-speed, low-latency internet coverage from a network of satellites.
