Liberian cargo ship sinks in Kerala: Navy and Coast Guard rescue all 24 crew members; containers contained dangerous chemicals

Liberian cargo ship MSC Elsa 3 sank off the Kochi coast in Kerala. All 24 crew members were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Navy. The 640 containers loaded on the ship contained some dangerous chemicals including calcium carbide, diesel, furnace oil. The ship left for Kochi from Vizhinjam Port in Kerala on May 23. On May 24, at around 1:25 pm, it was reported to have tilted by about 26 degrees at a distance of 38 nautical miles from the Kochi coast. As soon as the emergency was reported, the Marine Rescue Sub Center (MRSC) of ICG in Kochi started the rescue operation. By late evening, 21 out of 24 crew members from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Philippines were rescued. The remaining three senior crew members remained on the ship to try to prevent the ship from sinking. However, the tilt of the ship kept increasing and it sank today. Navy ship INS Sujata also rescued the remaining three crew members.
