The US government on Wednesday announced a visa ban on those who censor the posts of American people on the social media platforms of American tech companies. America is the first country to take this decision. Foreign Minister Marco Rubia said – If a foreign official censors the posts of American people in his country by threatening arrest or other punishment, then it will not be accepted. He said that visa ban will be imposed on those foreign officials who demand the removal or control of content on American tech platforms. Rubio said – It is not acceptable that foreign officials threaten to arrest American citizens present in the US for their social media posts. However, no specific country or official was named in this statement. Rubio said that some foreign citizens, while holding official positions, have taken action of ‘censorship’ against American tech companies and American citizens, while they did not have the right to do so. Rubio said – Foreigners do not have the right to censor the posts of American citizens Rubio said – The new visa ban will apply to those foreign citizens who are responsible for censoring freedom of expression in America. He said that if an American citizen posts something from American soil, no country or its officials have the right to demand that the post be removed, even if they find it objectionable or insulting. Most of the world’s social media companies are American. Most of the social media platforms used across the world belong to American tech companies. Company X is owned by Elon Musk, Facebook, Instagram and Meta are CEOd by Mark Zuckerberg, while YouTube and Google are also American companies. The US has implemented the new visa ban at a time when several European and Asian countries have taken legal action against American social media companies. These countries issued notices for removing social media content and also pronounced punishment.
