Thousands of houses were destroyed in three days due to heavy floods in Niger state of Nigeria and at least 117 people have died. Many others are still missing. Rescue operation teams are engaged in help work. According to the official of the Emergency Management Agency of Niger State, more than 3 thousand houses were submerged due to the flood. The situation worsened due to the breaking of the dam in the area. In Nigeria, areas along the Niger and Benue rivers often flood during the rainy season. In September last year, heavy rains and dam breakage caused floods in Maiduguri, Nigeria, in which 30 people were killed and lakhs of people were left homeless.

Both of them lost their lives for UN peacekeeping missions. The honored Brigadier General Amitabh Jha and Havildar Sanjay Singh were awarded the Dag Hammarskjold Medal.
