China on Friday created a new organization to resolve international disputes. Its name is International Organization for Mediation (IOMed). It has been presented as an alternative to institutions like International Court (ICJ) and Permanent Court of Arbitration. About 400 top officials from 85 countries and about 20 international organizations participated in it. Of these, 33 countries immediately signed and became the founding members of IOMED. China’s state-run newspaper Global Times described IOMed as the world’s first ‘inter-governmental legal organization’ to resolve international disputes through mediation. The head office will be in Hong Kong. In a high-level ceremony held in Hong Kong, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi formalized the agreement to establish IOMed. Indonesia, Pakistan, Belarus, Cuba and Cambodia were among the 33 countries that became the founding members of this organization along with China. The headquarters of IOMed will be in Hong Kong. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Hong Kong itself is an example of how disputes can be resolved peacefully. Hong Kong government chief John Lee said that his government will support IOMED in every way, so that this organization can find quick and reliable solutions.
