Iran has come very close to making nuclear weapons. The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has claimed in a confidential report that Iran has increased its stock of military grade uranium i.e. pure 60%. This uranium is considered very close to making nuclear weapons. The agency has appealed to Iran to increase cooperation and change its policy. This report has come at a time when efforts are being made to restart the nuclear deal between the US and Iran. Talks are going on between the two sides regarding this, but no concrete result has come out yet. At the same time, Israel said that the IAEA report shows that Iran has made full preparations to make nuclear weapons. Israel has appealed to the international community to stop it immediately. If Iran makes nuclear weapons, it will be the 10th country to do so. Russia has the most nuclear weapons in the world. 50% increase between February and May IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) has said that till May 17, Iran had about 408.6 kg of uranium of 60% purity. This quantity is 50% more than in February. When uranium is purified more, it becomes suitable for making weapons. 90% pure uranium is considered weapon-grade i.e. suitable for making nuclear bombs. Reaching 60% means that Iran is now just one step behind that level. IAEA also said that if Iran further purifies about 42 kg of uranium of 60%, then an atomic bomb can be made from it. Currently, Iran has a total of 9247.6 kg of enriched uranium. However, Iran says that its nuclear program is not for making bombs but for peaceful purposes, such as generating electricity or medicine. Iran termed the report as wrong Iran’s Foreign Ministry and Atomic Energy Organization called this report wrong and biased. He said that this report is based on unreliable sources and it has been prepared under political pressure. Iran also said that its nuclear program is peaceful under Islamic principles and international law. It referred to the fatwa of its supreme leader Khamenei in which nuclear weapons have been described as against Islam. Iran also alleged that when the US pulled out of the nuclear deal in 2018, the IAEA remained silent. America gave a new proposal to Iran Oman’s Foreign Minister arrived in Tehran and handed over a new proposal of America to the Iranian Foreign Minister. This proposal is related to limiting the nuclear program and relief in US sanctions. Recently, the fifth round of talks between the US and Iran took place in Rome, but no concrete result came out. What did the IAEA investigation find? The IAEA has sent another confidential report to member countries stating that Iran is not cooperating in the investigation, especially in places where traces of uranium have been found without information. The IAEA suspects that Iran had a secret military nuclear program in the early 2000s. This has come to light in the investigation about three old sites (Turkuzabad, Varamin and Marivan). The fourth site, Lavishan-Shian, was demolished by Iran after 2003 and the IAEA was not allowed to go there. 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons are with America and Russia. Sweden’s think tank SIPRI released a report related to nuclear weapons in June 2024. According to this, 3904 nuclear weapons missiles or aircraft are currently deployed around the world. India, Pakistan and North Korea are also preparing to deploy nuclear war heads on their ballistic missiles. SIPRI said that 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons are with Russia and America. …………………………………………..
