The Central Bank of Bangladesh issued new 1000, 50 and 20 taka notes on Sunday. The picture of Sheikh Hasina’s father and the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujiburahman has been removed from these notes. Apart from this, new notes of 500, 200, 100 and 10 taka will be issued soon. Regarding this, Bangladesh Central Bank spokesperson Arif Hussain Khan said – There will be no picture of any person in the new design, the traditional places of the country have got a place on the new notes. Khan further said – New notes will be issued from the headquarters of the Central Bank and later from the rest of the offices across the country.” However, old notes and coins will also remain in circulation. Pictures of Hindu and Buddhist temples will also be printed on the new notes. Since the formation of Bangladesh in 1971, the design of the notes has been changed five times (1972, 1970s, 1980-90s, 2000s, and 2025). The new notes are special from a religious and historical point of view. The 20 taka note has a picture of the Hindu temple Kantaji Temple and Paharpur Monastery located in Dinajpur. The 50 taka note has a painting of the palace Ahsan Manzil and Zainul Abedin located in the capital Dhaka. At the same time, the 1,000 taka note has pictures of the National Martyr’s Memorial and the Jatiya Sansad Bhavan. All three have the Royal Bengal Tiger watermark and the bank’s monogram. Bangladesh’s currency linked to political turmoil According to Bangladeshi media, this is linked to political turmoil. The history of Bangladesh’s currency shows the influence of ruling parties from time to time. When Bangladesh separated from East Pakistan and gained independence in 1972, the initial notes had geographical and cultural images. Later, pictures of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were included on the notes, especially when his Awami League party was in power. The new currency is being considered a step towards reducing the influence of Sheikh Hasina’s regime and making the country’s image inclusive. Attack on many symbols related to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Since the coup in Bangladesh in August 2024, the symbols related to Sheikh Mujibur were continuously attacked. His statue was vandalized in Dhaka and nameplates installed in many public places were also removed. The interim government also canceled 8 government holidays related to independence and the founding days. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first President of Bangladesh. He was also the Prime Minister of the country from 17 April 1971 to 15 August 1975. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s father Mujibur Rahman also played a big role in getting Bangladesh independence from Pakistan. On 15 August 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated at his home. Trial begins against Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity Trial has started on charges related to crimes against humanity against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. These charges were formally registered in the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on Sunday. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam has registered these charges in the tribunal. ICT prosecutor Gazi Manowar Hussain Tamim has given this information to the Daily Star. On May 12, the tribunal’s investigation agency submitted its investigation report against Hasina. In this, five charges of crimes against humanity were made during the movement in July 2024. According to the report, more than 1500 people were killed during the movement while more than 25 thousand were injured. The movement against reservation had led to a coup. Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 last year and came to India. In fact, students were protesting against her across the country. On June 5, the High Court in Bangladesh implemented a 30% quota system in jobs, against which university students in Dhaka were protesting. This reservation was being given to the families of freedom fighters. However, the Hasina government later abolished this reservation. After this, students started protesting demanding her resignation. A large number of students and common people took to the streets against Hasina and her government. Two months after this protest, on August 5, she resigned from the post of Prime Minister.
