General elections will be held in Bangladesh in April 2026. Chief Advisor in the interim government Mohammad Yunus announced this on Friday evening. In an address to the nation a day before Eid, Yunus said, the next general election will be held in the first fortnight of April 2026. For this, the Election Commission will later present a detailed roadmap. Yunus said that all the reforms required for the elections will be completed by next year. Mohammad Yunus was made the Chief Advisor of the interim government after the coup of Sheikh Hasina in August last year. The army had asked to hold elections by December this year. Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zama addressed an officer at the military headquarters on May 22. During this, the confrontation between the army and the interim government came to the fore. Addressing the officers, the Army Chief clearly said that the general elections should not be postponed beyond December this year. Apart from this, the Army Chief had asked the interim government led by Yunus not to take decisions on sensitive national issues. Apart from the army, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s BNP had also increased pressure on Yunus and reiterated its demand for holding elections in December. The party had warned that if the government does not prepare an election roadmap soon and make a public announcement about it, it will be difficult for them to continue their cooperation with the government. Bangladesh also has an election process similar to India’s Lok Sabha elections. Here, the election of members of Parliament is done through the first-past-the-post system, just like in India. That is, the candidate who gets even one vote more will win. After the election results are out, the MPs of the largest party or coalition elect their leader and he becomes the Prime Minister. The President administers the oath of office of the Prime Minister of the country. There are a total of 350 seats in the Parliament here. Out of these, 50 seats are reserved for women. Elections are not held on reserved seats, while general elections are held every five years for 300 seats. Apart from Lok Sabha, there is also Rajya Sabha in the Parliament of India, but there is only one house in the Parliament of Bangladesh. Who is the head of the government in Bangladesh? Like India, in Bangladesh too the Prime Minister is the head of the government. The President is the head of the country, who is elected by the National Parliament. In Bangladesh, the President is just a formal post and he has no real control over the government. Till 1991, the President was directly elected by the people here too, but later a constitutional change was made. Through this, the President started being elected by the Parliament.
