Eid-ul-Azha i.e. Bakrid is being celebrated across the country today. After the Pahalgam terror attack, people in Jammu and Kashmir also offered prayers in mosques. However, Srinagar’s Jama Masjid remained closed on Eid-ul-Azha for the seventh consecutive year. After the removal of Article 370 in 2019, the Jama Masjid has been locked for security reasons. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah objected to this. He said, ‘I do not know the basis of the decision to keep the Jama Masjid closed, but we have to learn to trust our people. These are the same people who opposed the Pahalgam attack. The Center should think about allowing prayers in the historic Jama Masjid.’ Former Jammu and Kashmir CM and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti also questioned the decision to keep the mosque closed. The former CM said, ‘Jama Masjid is locked on the day of Eid. This is against our religion. CM Omar Abdullah has been placed under house arrest. If everything is fine then why is all this being done.’ In 2018, masked youths had hoisted the ISIS flag on the mosque
The Jama Masjid located in Nauhatta, Srinagar is the largest mosque in Jammu and Kashmir. It is also called Friday Mosque. On 28 December 2018, some masked youths hoisted the ISIS flag in the Jama Masjid after Friday prayers. A video of the incident went viral on social media, which was widely criticized. After the removal of Article 370 on 5 August 2019, the government banned prayers in the Jama Masjid. The COVID-19 pandemic was also cited as a reason behind the closure of the mosque.
