Air India has submitted a report to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the Ahmedabad plane crash case. It states that the Dreamliner plane is one of the safest planes. It has more than a thousand flights worldwide. According to the India Today report, the airline has given a statement on the Dreamliner while presenting its side during the PAC meeting. However, the meeting was to discuss levy charges at the airport. On Tuesday, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is investigating the Ahmedabad plane crash, submitted its primary report to the Civil Aviation Ministry MOCA. AAIB is working in collaboration with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). On June 12, Air India flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London collided with a medical hostel building shortly after takeoff. 270 people were killed in this, including 241 passengers and crew members. Only one passenger survived this accident. Questions on Aviation’s Safety Procedures According to the report, the MPs included in the PAC committee sought answers from the aviation officials on the safety procedures. An immediate audit was demanded from BCAS. Questions were also raised on the functioning of the DGCA in the meeting. Along with this, concerns were expressed on the recent security lapses. The increase in air fares after the Pahalgam terror attack was described as the failure of the controller. The committee also sought information on the basis of selection of the committee formed to investigate the Ahmedabad plane crash. The question was asked – were foreign aviation experts included in the investigation, was their opinion taken? On this, Air India said – We are also concerned about the plane crash. At present, the official report is awaited. These officials were present in the meeting Air India CEO Wilson Campbell, senior officers of Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) were present in the meeting. Apart from Air India, senior officials of other airlines including IndiGo, Akasa Air were also present in the meeting. Photo-video investigation of Ahmedabad plane crash This week, the New York Times (NYT) analyzed the photo-video and audio of the accident. This analysis, done with the help of aviation security specialists, former pilots, investigators and audio experts, indicates that the takeoff of the plane was normal. The fault in the plane started in the air. According to the NYT report, before takeoff, the plane opened the wing flaps and slats, took off from the general point using the full length of the runway, but a few seconds after the flight, the landing gear could not be closed completely. What NYT’s investigation indicated on four aspects… 1. Takeoff: The point on the runway from which AI 171 took off was similar to the point on the runway from which the seven previous takeoffs had also taken place from almost the same spot 2. Slats, flaps: Both were in the extended position, which means the pilots followed some standard procedures at the start of takeoff Shawn Pruchnicki, former accident investigator for the Airline Pilots Association, says, “Burn marks show the slats were extended either before impact or at the time of the explosion on the ground. Flaps located on the trailing edges of the wings were also deployed, though not clearly seen in the video.” In Boeing 787-8 aircraft, when the pilot activates the flaps, the slats extend automatically. 3. Landing gear (this is the first sign of trouble): The process of folding it from the cockpit started, but it could not be completed… The emergency power generator was activated 4. Jerk (this is very unusual): There was no jerk or side movement in the plane, that is, both the engines got damaged simultaneously… ………………. However, due to the presence of mind of Captain Sumit Sabharwal (56), many lives were saved. According to sources, when Captain Sumit realized that he would not be able to prevent the plane from crashing, he deliberately crashed the plane at a place where the damage would be minimal.
