The Supreme Court, while hearing a case related to stray dogs on Friday, ordered the Chief Secretaries of all states to appear before the court. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta dismissed a petition seeking exemption for the Chief Secretaries of states and union territories from personal appearances. Justice Nath said, “When we ask the Chief Secretaries to file affidavits, they remain silent. There is no respect for our orders. So, let them come. We will deal with them.” The Supreme Court has ordered the Chief Secretaries to appear in person on November 3rd. Previously, on October 27th, the Court had sought responses from the Chief Secretaries of all states except West Bengal and Telangana. The Supreme Court has been hearing the case since July 28th, taking action on a media report about rabies caused by stray dog bites. August 22 – The court had expanded the scope of the stray dog case from Delhi-NCR to the entire country. In the last hearing held on August 22, the Supreme Court had expanded the scope of the case related to stray dogs from Delhi-NCR to the entire country and had directed all the states and union territories to become parties in it. The court had said, “The dogs that are caught should be sterilized and vaccinated and then released back at the place from where they were picked up.
