Ads may soon be available in ChatGPT: ‘Search Ads’ mentioned in the Android beta app’s code; OpenAI’s monetization strategy

Users may soon see sponsored suggestions and ads in ChatGPT. According to reports from Bleeping Computer and FindArticles, OpenAI is preparing to introduce ads to ChatGPT. The company hasn’t made an official announcement, but early code references to ChatGPT’s new Android beta app version indicate the launch of ads. According to tech portal Bleeping Computer, strings like “search ads,” “search ads carousel,” and “market content” have been found in the code of ChatGPT’s Android beta app (version 1.2025.329). This indicates that OpenAI is building infrastructure to display chat-based sponsored content. Engineer Tibor Blaho shared on X that the code is developing a system for sponsored content. It appears to be focused more on search queries than general chat. Tech news platform GizmoChina stated that the ads will not be traditional banners, but rather contextual suggestions, such as product cards in shopping queries. Why is OpenAI bringing ads? The cost of running OpenAI’s powerful models is very high. Currently, revenue is generated through subscriptions (ChatGPT Plus) and API licensing, but ads will become a third revenue source. CEO Sam Altman has stated that there is an option to try ads, but they have not made any commitments. ChatGPT was publicly unveiled in 2022. OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT to the world in November 2022.
