The Navy will receive a modern submarine-killing weapon; the Army will receive a new rifle; ₹4,666 crore will be spent, marking the second consecutive major defense deal.

The Ministry of Defense on Tuesday signed defense agreements worth ₹4,666 crore to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Army and Navy. Under these agreements, the Army will receive over 4.25 lakh new battle carbine rifles. 48 modern heavyweight submarine-killing torpedoes will also be purchased for the Navy. According to the Ministry of Defense, close-quarter battle carbine rifles and related equipment worth ₹2,770 crore will be purchased. Agreements have been signed with Bharat Forge Limited and PLR Systems Private Limited. Another agreement worth ₹1,896 crore will purchase 48 heavyweight torpedoes for the Navy’s Kalvari-class submarines. The Italian company WASS Submarine Systems SRL has signed a deal for this. Delivery of these torpedoes will begin in April 2028 and be completed by early 2030. The Ministry stated that this decision was taken under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (Self-Reliant India) campaign to enhance the military’s capabilities through indigenous and modern technology.
