Bangladesh out of T20 World Cup: Refused to play in India; ICC includes Scotland in its place

Bangladesh has been eliminated from the T20 World Cup. The International Cricket Council (ICC) replaced Scotland in their place. ICC Chairman Jay Shah made this decision during a meeting in Dubai. The ICC announced this on its social media handles. The Bangladesh government refused to play in India despite a 24-hour deadline given by the ICC on Thursday, leading to the ICC’s decision to move the match to India. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) filed an appeal with the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) against the ICC’s decision to hold the match in India, but it was also rejected. This entire controversy began after Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the IPL. Following this, the BCB refused to send the team to India, citing it as unsafe to play there. We want to play in the World Cup – BCB. Bangladesh government’s sports advisor Asif Nazrul held a meeting with the national team players in Dhaka on Thursday. After the meeting, he said, “We want to play the World Cup, but concerns about the safety of our players and support staff in India remain.” Here are two major reasons why Bangladesh refused to play in India: 1. In protest against the ongoing killings of Hindus in Bangladesh, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expelled Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL. The BCB protested this. 2. Bangladesh’s political parties made Mustafizur’s exclusion an issue. The Yunus government then banned IPL broadcasts in the country. Following this, the cricket board demanded that the World Cup not be played in India, which the ICC rejected. Pakistan supported, but did not boycott. A day earlier, Bangladesh had hoped that the PCB would boycott the tournament in support of its decision. The Pakistan Board (PCB) expressed support at the ICC Board meeting, but did not withdraw from the tournament. However, some media reports claimed that Pakistan might reconsider its decision to play the World Cup. Why did Scotland get the opportunity? Scotland’s ICC T20 team ranking is 14th. They finished third in Group B of the last World Cup. They had the same number of points as England, but England advanced to the next round due to a better run rate. In the 2022 World Cup, the team also failed to advance to the next round after finishing third in the group stage. In the 2021 World Cup, the team defeated Bangladesh. Scotland’s performance in the previous tournament earned them a spot. Scotland will be placed in Group C alongside West Indies, Italy, England, and Nepal. The team will play its first three matches in Kolkata and the final match in Mumbai. Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 stage. Controversy surrounding Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL: Due to the massacre of Hindus in Bangladesh, the BCCI did not allow Mustafizur Rahman to play in the IPL. He was dropped by KKR on January 3 at the BCCI’s behest. This angered the Bangladesh government, which banned the broadcast of IPL matches in its country. Following this, citing the safety of the players, they also demanded a change in the venue of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to begin on February 7th. KKR had bought Mustafizur for ₹9.2 crore. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought Bangladeshi bowler Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore in the IPL mini-auction on December 16th. Following this, protests against Mustafizur began in India due to the killing of Hindus in Bangladesh. Seven Hindus have been killed there so far. The BCCI subsequently denied Mustafizur permission to play in the IPL, and KKR released him on January 3rd. What are the consequences of withdrawing from the World Cup? 1. Impact on ICC rankings: The Bangladeshi team will suffer a loss in the ICC T20 rankings. Other teams will gain ranking points, while Bangladesh’s position will remain stable. The ranking of their players will also decrease. 2. India-Bangladesh cricket relations will deteriorate: Cricket relations between India and Bangladesh will deteriorate, just as the Indian team does not play bilateral series with Pakistan. Similarly, India could refuse to tour Bangladesh. 3. Bangladeshi cricketers could be banned from the IPL: After withdrawing from the World Cup, the Indian board could ban Bangladeshi players from playing in the IPL. The BCCI has banned Pakistani players from the IPL. 4. Financial loss to the BCB: If the BCB withdraws from the tournament, it will lose its participation fee of approximately US$500,000 from the ICC. The real loss will be to the players, with their match fees, prize money, and performance-based payments all affected. 5. The BCB could face opposition from players: Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal had said that a wise decision should be made regarding the World Cup, as it will impact future generations. 6. Bangladesh could become isolated in the cricket world: After withdrawing from the World Cup, Bangladesh could become isolated in the cricket world because the BCCI dominates the cricket world. This was evident in the ICC meeting a day earlier, when Bangladesh received two votes and India received 14 votes on the demand to change the venue. —————————– Read this sports news too… India chased a 200+ target for the sixth time.
