The 70th South Filmfare Awards were held in Kochi, Kerala on Saturday. Amitabh Bachchan was awarded the Best Supporting Actor (Male) (Telugu) award for the film Kalki 2898 AD. This is his first South Filmfare Award. Amitabh Bachchan played the role of Ashwatthama in the Prabhas-starrer. The ceremony honored the best films and artists from the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada film industries. Pushpa 2 won five awards in the Telugu category, including Best Film, Best Director (Sukumar), and Best Actor (Allu Arjun). In the Tamil category, Amaran won seven awards, including Best Film, Best Actor (Sivakarthikeyan), and Best Actress (Sai Pallavi). Malayalam superstar Mammootty was named Best Actor for Brahmayugam. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given posthumously to the late actor-filmmaker Sreenivasan. Amitabh Bachchan did not attend the ceremony. The film Kalki 2898 AD was released on June 27, 2024. It was a resounding box office success, grossing over ₹1,000 crore worldwide. The film won two awards at the Filmfare Awards South (Telugu) 2026: Amitabh Bachchan won Best Supporting Actor (Male). History of the Filmfare Awards South
The Filmfare Awards are presented by Filmfare magazine, part of the South Times Group. The Filmfare Awards were established in 1954, initially for Hindi films only. In 1964, awards for South Indian languages (Tamil and Telugu) were introduced. Malayalam films were added in 1967, and Kannada in 1970. Over time, separate ceremonies began to be held for each industry. Initially, these ceremonies were held in Mumbai alongside the Hindi film awards, but after 1976, the South segment was separated and shifted to Chennai and Hyderabad. Kamal Haasan holds the record for the most individual awards (19) and the most Best Actor awards (17) at Filmfare South. K. Viswanath and K. Balachander have won the most awards in the Best Director category, with eight each. In music, A.R. Rahman leads with 18 awards. K. S. Chitra and Shreya Ghoshal have received 10 awards each in playback singing. Filmfare records include Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana and RRR, which have won the most awards for a single film, with nine each.
