In an interview, Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin leveled serious allegations against former interim government head Mohammad Yunus. He stated that the interim government formed after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024 attempted to remove him. Shahabuddin stated that he administered the oath of office to Yunus on August 8, 2024, and Yunus served as the de facto Prime Minister until February 16, 2026. He stated that Yunus’s government twice canceled his foreign trips. Once, he was prevented from traveling to Kosovo, and the second time, when an invitation from the Emir of Qatar was rejected, the Foreign Ministry sent a letter stating that the President was busy. The President also stated that he was not informed of the Bangladesh-US trade agreement signed just days before the elections. He stated that it is a constitutional responsibility to inform the President of any such agreement, but Yunus failed to do so. Shahabuddin said, “Yunus did not follow the Constitution.” Shahabuddin alleged that Yunus did not follow any provisions of the Constitution and that the interim government passed unnecessary ordinances. Yunus did not even inform him of his foreign trips, and went abroad 14-15 times, but never informed the President. He recalled the night of October 22, 2024, when a mob surrounded the presidential palace, Bangabhaban, demanding his removal. He said that night was extremely frightening for him. Shahabuddin described PM Tariq Rahman as honest and moderate. He said that when attempts were being made to remove him, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assured him of support. The leader said that they wanted to maintain the constitutional order and were not in favor of removing the President through any unconstitutional means. The President described the current Prime Minister and BNP chief Tariq Rahman as honest and moderate. He said that in addition to the BNP and its allies, the heads of all three branches of the military also fully supported him. According to him, the army chiefs stated that he was the head of the security forces, and his defeat would mean the defeat of the entire army. Previously, in December 2025, he had told Reuters that he felt isolated during the interim government and wanted to resign after the elections. Shahabuddin became President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, and his term ends in April 2028. The Rahman government may set up an inquiry commission against Yunus. This is not the first time such allegations have been leveled against Mohammad Yunus. A week ago, media reports stated that the wealth of his ministers had skyrocketed during Yunus’ tenure. Yunus’s own wealth increased by approximately 11% in a single year. Yunus’s total wealth now stands at ₹12.5 crore (125 million rupees), representing an increase of approximately ₹13 million (130 million rupees). Yunus’s wealth has increased the most among the top four ministers in the interim government. Housing Minister Adilur Rahman’s assets increased by ₹12.3 million (approximately $1.2 million USD). Eighteen of Yunus’ 21 ministers saw their assets increase. Sources indicate that the new Prime Minister, Rahman, may form a committee to investigate the increased assets of the interim government’s ministers. Amidst all this, Yunus is now preparing to relocate to Paris. It’s worth noting that Yunus is Bangladesh’s only Nobel Prize winner. Yunus, a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s microfinance sector, faced corruption charges during Sheikh Hasina’s government. However, Yunus withdrew the charges after his own government was formed. Its aim is to increase mutual trade and trade between the two countries and strengthen their trade relations. This isn’t just a matter of reducing tariffs; both countries have also agreed to open their markets further to each other. Under this agreement, the US has reduced the tariff on many goods imported from Bangladesh to approximately 19%, from a previous 35%. The direct benefit of this will be that Bangladeshi clothing and other products will be able to sell at a lower price in the US. The ready-made garment industry, in particular, is expected to benefit significantly, as the US is a major customer. In return, Bangladesh will also purchase more goods from the US, such as oil and gas, grain, and some military equipment. Clearly, both countries have decided to increase trade with each other. —————— Read this news too… Bangladeshi Army reshuffled after Tariq Rahman became PM: Defense advisor recalled from India and promoted; Chief of General Staff also replaced.
