Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Kolkata and surrounding districts of West Bengal at around 1:22 pm on Friday. The tremor lasted for about 10 seconds in Kolkata, sending people running out of their homes in panic. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Bangladesh’s Satkhira district, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Its magnitude was recorded at 5.5. Satkhira is located about 100 kilometers from Kolkata and just 25 kilometers from North 24 Parganas district. For about an hour after the earthquake, panic gripped the streets and open spaces in Kolkata. Several videos surfaced on social media showing household items and fans shaking during the quake. Even water bottles on tables were shaking. Besides Kolkata, panic gripped the districts of Howrah, Hooghly, Jhargram, and West Medinipur. There have been no reports of casualties or property damage. However, some office workers in Kolkata claimed that the tremors caused cracks in walls. A large section of road in the Behala area has developed cracks and caved in. Locals claim the damage was caused by the earthquake. No immediate aftershocks were felt after noon.
