Gujarat – PM inaugurates semiconductor plant in Sanand; says country is now recognized for hardware manufacturing; plant built at a cost of ₹22,516 crore

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated Micron Technology’s Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on Saturday. The Prime Minister noted that until 10-11 years ago, there was little discussion about data and chips in India. Previously, the country was known primarily for software, but today, India is also recognized for hardware manufacturing. He stated, “The MoU was signed in June 2023, work began in September 2023, and production began in February 2026.” Those familiar with this sector understand that this is a very fast-paced process. Clear policies lead to clear policies and quick decisions. This plant will mark the first commercial production and shipment of Made in India semiconductor memory modules. This is the first project of the central government’s Make in India Semiconductor Mission. The plant has been built at a cost of ₹22,516 crore. 4 key points from the PM’s speech… 6 photos from the event… The plant is based on ATMP technology. This plant is based on ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) technology. Semiconductor chips will be assembled, tested, marked, and then packaged at the plant. This will strengthen semiconductor manufacturing in the country and move the country towards becoming self-reliant in technology. Until now, India has been import-dependent for microchips. This plant will open new avenues for technological development, investment, and employment in the country. It will also accelerate initiatives like “Make in India” and “Digital India.” The plant was set up by the American microchip manufacturer Micron. The MoU was signed in August 2023 in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Prior to this MoU, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United States in July 2023, where Micron announced its intention to set up a plant in Gujarat. Four Semiconductor Plants in Gujarat
The central government approved Micron’s first semiconductor plant in Sanand in 2023. Subsequently, in February 2024, Tata Electronics’ semiconductor plant in Dholera was approved for a similar plant by CG Power in Sanand. Gujarat’s fourth plant is also scheduled to be located in Sanand. This plant will be set up by Keyence Semicon Private Limited with a proposed investment of ₹3,300 crore. Gujarat is the first state to formulate a semiconductor policy.
The Gujarat government has formulated a semiconductor policy for the period 2022 to 2027, making it the first state in India to do so. The “Gujarat Semiconductor Policy 2022-27” provides subsidies and incentives for semiconductor projects. A total of 75 percent subsidy and zero stamp duty on land purchases are planned for the projects. Along with this, water will be provided to the plant at the rate of Rs 12 per cubic meter for the first 5 years.
