Police in Odisha have arrested the accused who raped a 23-year-old woman and killed her by throwing her from the fourth floor. They also arrested the accused who raped the same woman after promising to marry her. Both incidents occurred on February 22nd, and the woman’s body was found on February 23rd. Police apprehended both accused on Saturday. First incident: Boyfriend called her to a temple to marry her, then raped her. Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankit Kumar Verma said that the woman had been missing from home since February 22nd at 10 a.m. She had left home to elope with her lover. Her lover, Somnath Ojha, lured her to a temple with false promises of marriage, but later took her to a secluded location and raped her. He then abandoned her at the Rahama bus stand. Second incident: An unknown man, under the pretext of offering help, took her to a room and raped her. On February 22nd, Shubham Kumar Singh, a resident of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, saw the woman standing alone and distressed at the bus stand and offered her help. He made the girl sit on his bike. Superintendent of Police Ankit Kumar Verma said that Shubham told her that he would help her reach her home. He took her to his rented room in Paradip, where he raped her. When the girl resisted, he raped her and then threw her from the roof of a four-story building, resulting in her death. Both cases came to light after the girl’s brother filed a missing person report. On February 23rd, based on the girl’s brother’s complaint, the police filed a missing person report. Police also sent the girl’s details to nearby police stations. On February 25th, police learned of the girl’s body being found in the Paradip police station area. During the investigation, police learned of both incidents. On February 28th, police arrested the accused, Somnath, on charges of rape under the pretext of marriage, and Shubham was arrested on charges of rape, murder, and destruction of evidence. Police reported that a large amount of adult video content was recovered from Shubham’s mobile phone. Naveen Patnaik raises questions about security Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik expressed anger over the incident. He wrote in a post, “…how many more innocent lives will be lost? From minor girls to women with disabilities, no one is safe.” He wrote that the law and order situation in the state is deteriorating and criminals have lost their fear of the law.
