Mumbai attack (26/11) accused Tahawwur Rana may be brought to India soon. The US court has approved Rana’s extradition under the India-US extradition treaty. According to the Economics Times report, the process of bringing Rana to India through diplomatic channels has started. Tahawwur Rana was arrested by the FBI in 2009. On August 15, 2024, Rana appealed against the extradition decision, which was rejected by the District Court. The US court had said in its decision that he could be sent to India under the extradition treaty between the two countries. Rana’s name is also registered as an accused in the 405-page charge sheet of the Mumbai attack. According to this, Rana is a member of ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba. According to the charge sheet, Rana was helping the main accused David Coleman Headley, the mastermind of the attack. On 26 November 2008, 10 terrorists of Lashkar-e-Taiba attacked Mumbai. 166 people were killed and 300 were injured. Some American citizens were also among those killed. In the encounter, the police killed 9 terrorists and arrested Ajmal Kasab. He was hanged in 2012. Rana-Headley had prepared the blueprint of Mumbai attack. According to the charge sheet of Mumbai Police, Rana was helping the terrorists in telling the place of attack and the places to stay after coming to India. Rana had prepared the blueprint, on the basis of which the attack was carried out. Rana and Headley had hatched the terrorist conspiracy. It was told in the charge sheet that Rana played a very big role in planning the conspiracy of Mumbai attack. Rana’s appeal was rejected on 15 August 2024. Rana’s appeal against the extradition decision was rejected by the US court on 15 August. The US court had said in its decision on August 15 that he could be sent to India under the extradition treaty between the two countries. To avoid being handed over to India, Pakistani-origin Tahawwur Rana had filed a habeas corpus in the US court. A habeas corpus petition is used when a person is kept in illegal custody. However, the District Court of Los Angeles had said in its decision that considering the allegations on the basis of which India has demanded the extradition of Tahawwur, his extradition can be allowed. After the verdict against him, Rana had filed another petition in the Ninth Circuit Court. The decision on this came on Thursday. In which the dismissal of the habeas corpus petition was justified. The panel admitted that Rana’s crime falls under the terms of the extradition treaty between the US and India. India has provided strong evidence of the allegations leveled against Rana regarding the attack. Tahawwur is a childhood friend of the attack’s mastermind David Headley
During the court hearing last year, government lawyers argued that Tahawwur was a childhood friend of the attack’s mastermind David Headley and he knew that Headley was working with Lashkar-e-Taiba. By helping Headley and providing him financial aid, Tahawwur was supporting the terrorist organization and the terrorists along with it. Rana knew whom Headley was meeting and what he was talking about. He also knew the planning of the attack and the names of some targets. The US government has said that Rana was a part of this entire conspiracy and there is every possibility that he has committed the crime of funding the terrorist attack. …………………………………..
