Students beat up Sheikh Hasina’s supporters in Bangladesh: They had come to celebrate Mujiburahman’s anniversary; case of genocide registered against former PM

Awami League workers were attacked on Thursday in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. All of them had gathered to celebrate the death anniversary of the country’s first president and Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on 15 August 1975. Since then, every year on this date, tributes have been paid to him on a large scale. Today, due to fear of clashes, many people remained inside their homes. Shops remained closed across the city. Meanwhile, students attacked Awami League supporters who had come to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with sticks. Since this morning, hundreds of students were roaming the streets near Mujib’s old house in Dhaka and identifying passersby. They were beating those who looked suspicious. They were catching them and handing them over to the army. A day earlier, the interim government of Bangladesh had cancelled the holiday on 15 August. At the same time, the UN is going to send a team to Bangladesh to investigate the violence that took place amid student protests in Bangladesh. Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus gave this information. A case has been registered against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the International Criminal Tribunal for genocide and crimes against humanity. The interim government of Bangladesh will investigate it under the supervision of the United Nations. Interim Government Legal Advisor Prof. Asif Najrul said that Sheikh Hasina had the responsibility of giving command, so her role in the deaths during the student reservation protest will be investigated. Tribunal Deputy Director Ataur Rahman said that a complaint has been registered and investigation of the case has started. According to the Bengali newspaper Daily Star, an official said that the father of the student killed in police firing has filed a case. 9th class student Arif Ahmed was shot by the police during the protest on August 5. He died 2 days later. Dozens of ministers and officers, including Asaduzzaman Khan, who was the Home Minister in the Hasina government, and Awami League General Secretary Obedul Quader, have also been accused in the International Tribunal. A shopkeeper Abu Sayed died in police firing on July 19 during the anti-reservation movement. In this, 6 more people along with Hasina were made accused. A kidnapping case was registered against Hasina on Wednesday. Supreme Court lawyer Sohail Rana said that on Hasina’s behest, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) soldiers kidnapped him in 2015. Sheikh Hasina, who resigned from the post of PM of Bangladesh and then left the country and came to India, reacted for the first time on Tuesday regarding the matter. Her son Sajeeb Wajid posted on social media quoting his mother. Hasina demanded punishment for the rioters in the country and said that there should be justice in the case of vandalism of the statue of her father and founder of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Sheikh Hasina urged Bangladeshi citizens to mourn on the anniversary of her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August. Mujibur Rahman was shot dead on 15 August 1975. Hasina said in the statement that “From July till now, many lives have been lost in vandalism, arson and violence in the name of the movement. I pray for the peace of their souls and express my condolences to them. My condolences are with all those who, like me, are living with the pain of losing their loved ones.” Several students, teachers, policemen, journalists, Awami League leaders and social workers were killed in the demonstrations. Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma met Foreign Affairs Advisor Tauheed Hussain on Wednesday. After the meeting, Verma said, “We are keen to take our relations with Bangladesh forward.” This was the first meeting between India and Bangladesh after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.
