The Calcutta High Court on Friday, August 23 handed over the investigation of the financial irregularities in RG Kar Hospital to the CBI. The High Court has also directed to present the status report of the investigation in the next hearing on September 17 after 3 weeks. The court has given this order on the petition of former Deputy Superintendent of the hospital Akhtar Ali. On August 21, he had filed a petition to get the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the financial irregularities that took place during the tenure of former Principal of the hospital and college Sandeep Ghosh. However, the West Bengal government had ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on August 19 to investigate the matter. The state government had said in the order that the team would investigate the transactions done from January 2021 till now and submit the report within a month. Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj said in his order – After the unfortunate incident of August 9, its investigation was handed over to the CBI. Involvement of many agencies in the investigation of the same case can delay the investigation. Therefore, the court directs that the SIT investigation of Sandeep Ghosh be handed over to the CBI. CBI can file a status port on this on the next hearing date. After the rape-murder incident in the hospital, Kolkata Police continued investigating the case for 5 days. Later on August 13, the Calcutta High Court handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI. The division bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam had said – Even after 5 days of the incident, the police has not reached any conclusion. There is a strong possibility that the evidence will be destroyed. Therefore, we feel that the case should be immediately transferred to the CBI. The Supreme Court itself took notice of the case. At the same time, the Supreme Court itself took notice of the Kolkata rape-murder case on August 18. The court also gave instructions to form a task force to investigate cases of sexual violence against medical professionals. The court ordered the CBI to submit the investigation report on August 20. After this, on August 22, the CBI presented the status report of the investigation in the Supreme Court. In the report, the CBI said that the evidence has been tampered with. CBI also questioned former principal Sandeep Ghosh in the rape-murder case. He was questioned for four consecutive days from August 16. He also got a break in between.
