Amidst the war going on between Russia and Ukraine for two and a half years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Ukraine on Friday. In a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky here, Modi said, “India has always been in favor of peace. I met Russian President Putin a few days ago. Then I told him eye to eye in front of the media that this is not the time for war.” Modi and Zelensky had a meeting for about 3 hours at the Mariinsky Palace in Ukraine. He invited Zelensky to come to India. After the meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told in a press conference that the two leaders also talked about India buying oil from Russia. Jaishankar said, “The decision to buy oil is taken according to the market condition. There is no political reason behind this.” Earlier, Modi along with Zelensky reached the Ukraine National Museum, where he paid tribute to the children killed in the war. He also placed a doll at the children’s memorial. Earlier, PM Modi went on a two-day visit to Poland on 21 and 22 August. Here he once again talked about finding a solution to the Ukraine crisis through dialogue. PM Modi left for Ukraine on 22 August late night by a special train. After completing the Ukraine tour, PM Modi left for Poland from Kiev at 7.30 pm on Friday. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ukraine. Ukraine was formed in 1991 after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Since then, no Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.
