Kolkata rape-murder case, more than 100 students injured in protest: Police lathicharged, used water cannon, fired tear gas shells; BJP’s Bengal bandh tomorrow

A large number of students protested against the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata on Tuesday (27 August). The students demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The protest was named ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’. Nabanna is the temporary secretariat of the West Bengal government, where the Chief Minister, ministers and officers sit. The secretariat located in Writers’ Building is currently under renovation. The protesting students had started gathering at Santragachi in Howrah. To stop the protest, the government had deployed 6 thousand police personnel on the streets. Howrah Bridge was sealed. Barricades were put up to stop the students, water cannons were installed. Grease was also applied on the barricades. The students marched towards Nabanna, but they could not succeed. The police lathi-charged the protesters, fired tear gas shells and fired water cannons. According to media reports, more than 100 students and more than 25 policemen were injured during the protest. Cases were registered against more than 100 students and they were detained. BJP called for a 12-hour Bengal bandh on Wednesday against the detention of students. On this, Mamata government said that there will be no bandh tomorrow. Government employees should reach office or else action will be taken against them. A trainee doctor was raped and murdered on the night of 8 August in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The body of the doctor was found on the morning of 9 August. After this, doctors from all over the country came out on the streets. After the appeal of the Supreme Court, doctors of many hospitals cancelled the strike. However, the phase of protest continues. 4. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, ‘The opposition and the ruling party should sit together and ensure that the protest is peaceful.’
